The majority of the grievances were directed at the authoritarian regime of Lord Dalhousie as governor of Lower Canada and Governor-in-Chief of British North America 1820-28 when he was recalled. Included are grievances relating to Dalhousies establishment of a new Quebec Gazette his censure of Sir Francis Burton for having sanctioned a Bill of Supply his dismissal of militia officers and exercise of intimidation during elections his dismissal of justices of the peace and the unfair manner of jury selection. "Among other things the Montreal petitioners complained that contrary to the laws of England juries both grand and petty and both King's Bench and Quarter Sessions were being drawn exclusively from the town of Montreal rather than from the district at large. The committee chaired by Denis-Benjamin Viger concluded that this practice of jurors being "selected or as it were packed - summoned exclusively from among the inhabitants of a particular place or from a particular class - cannot be more compatible with liberty than it is with the rules of impartial justice. It is repugnant to every principle of our government and can only tend to the overthrow of the constitution of the country .The executive's control over the process of selecting juries became for the Patriotes yet another symbol of despotism and of the attempted exclusion of canadiens from their democratic rights given that they predominated in the countryside; a number of highly political jury trials for libel and sedition did nothing to help matters. The controversy only began to die down from 1830 when James Kempt ordered that jurors be drawn from the body of the district; the denouement came in 1832 when the legislature adopted a law regulating the qualification and selection of jurors " Donald Fyson Grand Juries Political Power And Citizenship In Quebec And Lower Canada 1764-1830 a paper for the 77th annual meeting of the Canadian Historical Association Ottawa May 1998TPL 1549. 1808List2316Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin 1808. Letterpress broadside measuring 13 x 7 ¾ inches. Some slight toning near fine overall. Fine. A broadside announcing the candidates for the United States House of Representatives a list which includes Noah Webster. Webster received 212 votes in the preliminary election in May enough to get him a spot on the ballot but lost in the general election in a generally difficult time for Federalist politicians. Webster experienced a religious conversion during this period after being a not particularly devout Congregationalist earlier in his life and embraced the church completely perhaps due to the death of his infant son in 1806. Webster would run again for U.S. Representative in 1810 1812 and 1816 losing each time and eventually abandoned politics his last office held being in the Connecticut House of Representatives ending in 1807 shortly before his first campaign for national office. We find no record of this broadside in OCLC or other ephemera relating to Webster’s political career in Connecticut in the trade. The collected acts from this session were published in octavo format but we find no other record of this broadside printing. Hudson and Goodwin unknown

18369235Annapolis MD: William M'Neir 1836. Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 77 3 pp. First edition. In contemporary plain wrappers. Wrappers are detached and chipped; contents are generally foxed; small and early institutional stamp in the bottom margin of one page deep in the pamphlet; minor crease throughout the pamphlet from a vertical fold; dog-eared pages.

Quite a presentable copy of a scarce publication on the Baltimore Bank Riots of 1835 which grew out of the failure of the Bank of Maryland. There was a belief that its impending bankruptcy was anticipated by its officers leading to civil unrest. The issues at trial were whether Baltimore officials had reacted appropriately and adequately when unrest began and rioting actually broke out. This pamphlet gives numerous depositions as to events in the city during this extended period of civil violence. American Imprints identifies another issue of this with slight differences to the title page that was issued the same year. Despite there being two issues it remains remarkably rare in commerce. Henkels offered it in 1915; beyond this there are no other auctions or offerings noted by the usual sources. OCLC locates barely a dozen copies of both issues together. American Imprints 38812. 19477621Winnipeg Manitoba: Gauvin Gentzel Studio 1947. First Edition. Original Photograph on Mount. Original silver gelatin photograph panoramic format measuring 13" x 7.25" mounted on its original heavy card mat to an overall size of 14" x 17". Bears the imprint of the prominent Winnipeg firm "Gauvin Gentzel Studio" to the upper left. A printed caption below the image identifies the "Manitoba Legislative Assembly 1947" and lists all members by row along with the Speaker and legislative staff.

A crisp and detailed panoramic photograph capturing the 22nd Manitoba Legislature in session. The image provides a rare wide-angle view of the historic chamber with all members present at their desks. This 1947 assembly is a fascinating snapshot of Manitoba's unique "Coalition" era. The government led by Premier Stuart S. Garson K.C. pictured in the 3rd row was a fusion of Liberal-Progressives and Progressive Conservatives a "non-partisan" administration that had its origins in the war years.

The photograph is a roster of Manitoba's post-war political establishment. In addition to Premier Garson who would leave in 1948 to join the federal cabinet the roster includes his successor Hon. Douglas L. Campbell 3rd Row who would go on to be Premier for a decade. Also present are numerous other cabinet ministers and future luminaries including: Hon. J. S. McDiarmid 3rd Row who would be appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba in 1953; Lt.-Col. Gordon Churchill 1st Row a future federal MP and prominent cabinet minister in the Diefenbaker government; Gunnar S. Thorvaldson K.C. 2nd Row a future Senator.

Most remarkably this image captures the legislature's sole dissenter and one of its most notable figures: William "Bill" A. Kardash 2nd Row. As the only member of the Labor-Progressive Party Communist in the assembly Kardash was a conspicuous and often isolated voice in the coalition-dominated house. His presence seated amongst the very establishment he ideologically opposed is a powerful visual representation of the era's complex political landscape at the dawn of the Cold War.

The photograph itself is a fine example of the large-format group portraiture perfected by the Gauvin Gentzel Studio one of Winnipeg's leading photographic firms for decades known for their clarity and high-quality compositions. The silver gelatin print retains excellent clarity sharp detail and strong contrast. The mat is clean and bright with only very light toning to the edges and minor bumping to the corners. A near-fine example.

Gauvin Gentzel Studio unknown
