Laws of Wisconsin Territory passed by the Legislative Assembly at the Session in February A.D. 1848 - published by Authority. This is a softcover book in used condition. All of the pages are there and firmly attached to the spine - the paper is strong but the front cover is chipped at the corners and the back cover has a large chip about half the page. The paper that used to cover the spine is gone. The pages show some dog eared corners and general use but overall this book is still complete and very useful and readable. The majority of the grievances were directed at the authoritarian regime of Lord Dalhousie as governor of Lower Canada and Governor-in-Chief of British North America 1820-28 when he was recalled. Included are grievances relating to Dalhousies establishment of a new Quebec Gazette his censure of Sir Francis Burton for having sanctioned a Bill of Supply his dismissal of militia officers and exercise of intimidation during elections his dismissal of justices of the peace and the unfair manner of jury selection. "Among other things the Montreal petitioners complained that contrary to the laws of England juries both grand and petty and both King's Bench and Quarter Sessions were being drawn exclusively from the town of Montreal rather than from the district at large. The committee chaired by Denis-Benjamin Viger concluded that this practice of jurors being "selected or as it were packed - summoned exclusively from among the inhabitants of a particular place or from a particular class - cannot be more compatible with liberty than it is with the rules of impartial justice. It is repugnant to every principle of our government and can only tend to the overthrow of the constitution of the country .The executive's control over the process of selecting juries became for the Patriotes yet another symbol of despotism and of the attempted exclusion of canadiens from their democratic rights given that they predominated in the countryside; a number of highly political jury trials for libel and sedition did nothing to help matters. Overall very good condition. A very rare volume still colorful and beautiful.The New England state of Connecticut played a relatively small but important role in the American Civil War providing arms equipment money supplies and manpower for the Union Army as well as the Union Navy. Damp stained on bottom of front and rear board slightly bleeding through to first and last several pages but no significant damage. Top raised edge of calf from spine above gilt and board top edge-line is gone wear to bottom edge with a small 1/8 inch square piece missing. Hinges and all signatures are tight. Some corner wear and bumping though retaining square. Previous Owner name inside front cover in red ink stamp black ink stamp "271" on foot edge of pages. No other marks. Photos upon request.
