1932205181932. African American Religion Silver gelatin photograph of twenty-two African American congregates at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. 1932. Approx. 4.5" x 6.5". Photograph shows twenty-two congregates of varying ages twenty-one adults and one child dressed in "Sunday best" sitting and standing in two rows in front of a church sanctuary. Caption written on photograph reads "Ward #1 Mt. Zion Baptist Church 1932". Baptist Protestantism has been the predominant religion among African Americans from the Civil War until today however the Great Depression marked a particularly difficult time period for Baptist churches across the United States. In 1932 Protestant church attendance was at an all time low in part due to the church's inability to dispense charity to the needy and due to a general loss of faith in the face of financial hardship. African American Baptist Mt. Zion congregations are also known for their roles in the Civil Rights Movement. The churchgoers pictured were among a select few who remained steadfast practitioners of Baptist Protestantism during a difficult time in U.S. history. Very good condition. unknown
