Archive of three issues of China Notes a critical educational publication distributed by the East Asia Office of the Division of Overseas Ministries in New York. Aimed at American educators religious scholars and mission-affiliated readers China Notes served as a bridge between U.S. audiences and the People's Republic of China during a period of thawing diplomatic relations and renewed American interest in Chinese society following Nixon's 1972 visit. Each measure 8.5" x 11" printed on unbound yellow paper 10-11 pages per issue. Each issue features articles lesson plans and firsthand interviews intended to reshape Western understanding of contemporary China. Issues included are:<br /> <br /> 1 China Notes Vol. XI No. 1 Winter 1972-73 Cover article: "Buddhism in China" offers a nuanced theological and sociopolitical study of Chinese Buddhism post-1949 explaining the intersection of Buddhist practice with Maoist ideology. Additional pieces include "Religion and the Churches" a look at the challenges faced by Christian communities under the People's Republic and a retrospective index of previous issues.<br /> <br /> 2 China Notes Vol. XI No. 2 Spring 1973 Cover article: "Down on the Commune" by Arthur W. Galston based on field observations in rural China investigates daily life and agricultural practices within people's communes with a focus on food production worker solidarity and health systems. The issue includes pedagogical content such as "Learning and Teaching About China" and interviews with U.S. high school students who had recently studied modern Chinese history.<br /> <br /> 3 China Notes Vol. XI No. 4 Autumn 1973 Cover article: "The Chinese Revolution and American Missions" by Mark Rankin critically revisits the American Protestant missionary presence in pre-Communist China arguing for a reassessment of the moral and cultural failures of mission strategy amid nationalist movements. Other features include reflections on U.S.-China relations an article on Chinese-American history titled "China and U.S. Chinese-American Identity" and recent data on Chinese urban reforms.<br /> <br /> Light edgewear and slight discoloration to paper; overall very good condition. The first community cookbook published in Connecticut and one of the earliest of community cookbooks from any state. A second edition was published the following year slightly expanded to 68 pages and now with the proceeds "for benefit of a Girls' School at Walla Walla Washington". With recipes in narrative form and only a few attributed. Some light soiling throughout but sound; newspaper clipping pasted down to free front endpaper. Good or better. Ink notes to rear endpaper and pencil annotations to a number of recipes. Early ownership inscription to front paste down "Sargeant Worcester 1875". 19578Christ Church Oxford. The eight documents dating from between 1879 and 1883. Six of the eight items in good condition lightly aged and worn; the other two showing heavier signs of age and wear. The six sets of accounts from the 'Steward's Office' - for various terms between Christmas 1879 and Christmas 1882 - are each described by Harington on the reverse as 'Battels'. All six are printed forms over a single 8vo page headed 'Christ Church' and laid out in the same style and completed in manuscript with the details of the expenditure of 'Mr Richard Harington' the last being the greatest at £49 12s 7d. They give itemised sums for 'University Dues' 'Establishment' 'Fixed charge' and 'Varying' 'Tuition' 'Room Rent' 'Battels as per Weekly Account' 'Glazier' 'Rates &c.' and 'Damage Account'. Four carry receipts signed over a stamp two by Ackland and two by another party. Also present are two receipts made out and signed by Acland on printed grey-paper slips headed 'Christ Church Oxford' one from October 1881 and the other from January 1883. Christ Church, Oxford. Menus with seating plans for the gaudys of 1906 1914 1920 1921 1925 1927 and 1930. Six of the seven uniform in design printed on both sides of pieces of 24 cm square paper folded twice into a 24 x 8 cm packet. The seventh 1925 printed on both sides of a 28 x 22.5 cm piece of paper folded three times into a 14 x 7.5 cm packet. Each printed in blue with the college's sign of a cardinal's hat printed in red on the front with the date and the words 'CHRIST CHURCH GAUDY.' The menu is on the reverse of the packet which opens out to give the floor plan naming all those who are to attend over one side. Distinguished guests on the table plan for 1925 included Winston Churchill Admiral Jellicoe the Archbishop of Canterbury.
