Si è sempre privilegiato l'aspetto biografico, la drammatica storia di Kurt Cobain e l'impetuosa ascesa della band nei giorni furenti del grunge di Seattle. Si è sempre fatta poca attenzione alla musica, alle canzoni. Qui invece abbiamo un libro che parla di canzoni; in maniera dettagliata, precisa, quasi maniacale. È la storia delle registrazioni dei Nirvana, tutte ma proprio tutte: 25 sedute ufficiali e altre occasioni informali, analizzate brano per brano. Non solo «Nevermind», «In Utero» e i dischi famosi che hanno fatto la storia del rock moderno; anche le primissime incisioni di Cobain ragazzino su un quattro piste nella sua cameretta da adolescente, anche i più oscuri demo di quando i Nirvana erano in fasce, solo una delle tante band in cerca di fortuna nell'America rock degli anni '80.
