Un libro composto a più voci, che cerca di affrontare il tema della felicità liberandolo dalle manifestazioni New Age e anche dalle lamentele dei professionisti dei disastri. La felicità come possibile, come impegno e immaginazione. Due saggi dei curatori affrontano l'analisi uno dal punto di vista storico e l'altro dal punto di vista sociologico. Seguono quattro scritti, tre molto personali, e chiude la riflessione di una psicologa, Flavia Flacco, che affronta il tema del pensare positivo a tutti i costi come pericoloso sintomo di rimozione e di paura. In principio la felicità era un sentimento privato, come la tristezza o la malinconia. Oggi, invece, sembra quasi una costrizione pubblica. Dalla propaganda New Age agli spot televisivi, dalle pubblicazioni di manuali che pretendono di insegnare come essere o vivere felici ai film di una comicità accomodante ed epidermica, un trionfale irritante edonismo impone dappertutto le sue regole, allontanando i dolori, nascondendo in angoli appartati le magagne quotidiane dell'esistenza. E' un modo superficiale di affrontare la vita, cui questi saggi invitano a opporsi, non per cedere nell'eccesso opposto di visioni apocalittiche o di lamentele passatiste, ma per riflettere sulle assurde procedure che spostano meditazioni profondamente individuali e soggettive verso atteggiamenti codificati. Se la felicità è un dovere, afferma Filippo La Porta che apre introduttivamente la sequenza dei saggi da lui curati insieme ad Alessandro Carrera, è comunque un dovere che va interpretato, e, da Epicuro a Robert Nozick attraverso Leopardi e una rilettura di Adorno, la sua analisi è una sollecitazione a vivere senza conformismi di sorta. A La Porta segue il punto di vista sociologico - da Thomas Jefferson ad Audrey Hepburn - e autobiografico di Alessandro Carrera sui concetti di felicità americana ed europea e le considerazioni di Rachel Wetzsteon sulle difficoltà di essere felici in due. Flavia Facco invece affronta da psicologa il tema del pensare positivo come pericoloso sintomo di rimozione e di paura, mentre Emily Fox Gordon racconta la sua odissea terapeutica di disadattata infelice in un centro rieducativo. Una segnalazione a parte merita Cynthia Ozick e il suo particolare contributo. La scrittrice ebrea americana, i cui romanzi sono tradotti anche in Italia, indaga sul suicidio di primo Levi, la cui motivazione, secondo lei, è già implicita ne "I sommersi e i salvati" suo ultimo libro. E la Ozick sembra quasi richiamarci a una conclusione: quanto sia difficile o impossibile il ritorno alla felicità laddove l'umanità venga così crudelmente oltraggiata.
