Le précurseur de l'évolutionnisme En dépit de leur brièveté, les écrits manuscrits récemment dédu mystérieux « Solitaire de Champagne », philosophe clandestin de la réde Chaource/Ervy-le-Châtel, près de Troyes, se révèlent être une importante production de la libre pensée au siècle des Lumières. Dans ce recueil d'opuscules et de poésies grivoises définissant une philosophie panthéistique matérialiste est en effet exposée, par la bouche d'un « individu semi-homme semi-bête, engendré d'une négresse et d'un orang-outang » une théorie de l'évolution des espèces qui, datée de 1772, constitue sans doute la première formulation véritable de l'hypothèse transformiste. On trouvera en outre dans le présent volume l 'édition, due à Alain Mothu, d'un autre texte clandestin inédit du XVIIIe , l'anonyme Lettre à Madame, dont l'auteur se propose de démontrer que l'homme, qui marchait primitivement à quatre pattes, n'est qu'un quadrupède contrarié.
