A very similarly bound copy of this book bound by Bozerian sold at Anderson Galleries in 1939 in Part 4 of The Courtlandt Bishop Library. This copy has all indications of having been bound by Bozerian for Napoleon who was known as a voracious reader. Jean-Claude Bozérian and his younger brother François Bozérian were the leading binders of the First Empire and both worked for Napoleon. The elder Bozérian won the bookbinding medal of the Paris 1801 exhibition and was a busy publisher and bookseller as well. A manuscript invoice for binding work to Napoleon was sold at Christie's in 2005 for work that was performed in 1802. Renouard unknown

Twelve leather bound volumes containing the sermons of the popular eighteenth century preacher. Twelve volumes containing the collected sermons of the popular eighteenth century preacher Jean-Baptiste Massillon. Published in French. Having been selected to be the Advent preacher at the court of Versailles in 1699 Massillon gained a wide reputation and was made Bishop of Clermont in 1717. Historians have attributed Massilon's popularity to his ability to consider moral questions without being too dogmatic. The present collection includes sermons for Advent Lent funerals as well as some psalms and panegyrics. Prior owner's bookplate to the front paste down of all volumes. From the library of L Comte de Lanet in the Chateau de la Garde Giron. In a full mottled calf binding. Externally rather worn. The majority of the volumes have chips in the calf to the boards particularly noticeable in the Advent volume the Funeral Orations the Panegyrics and the first and fourth volumes of the Lent speeches. Most of the volumes are also missing a slither of calf to the head or tail of the spine with the Mysteries Panegyrics the second and fourth volume of the Lent sermons missing some calf to both. The second volume of the Conferments is missing a little more calf to the tail than the other volumes. The front and rear hinges are starting but firm in the Mysteries and the Advent sermons. Just the front hinge is starting to the second volume of the Lent sermons and the second volume of the Conferments whilst the rear hinge is starting but firm to the Panegyrics but is very tender to Petite Careme. Internally generally firmly bound aside from the first few pages of the Advent volume and the rear pages of Petite Careme. Pages are generally bright and clean with a few stains to the front of the first few pages of the fourth Lent volume. Good Only J. Th. Herissant; S. Paul & S. Hilaire; Les Freres Estienne hardcover
1792015870Paris Lyon: Buisson Bryset 1792. Buisson, Bryset unknown

Portrait frontispiece with blue tissue guard. Pages starting to lightly fox. Jean Baptiste Massillon June 24 1663 - September 28 1742 was a French churchman and preacher Bishop of Clermont from 1717 until his death. He was born at Hyères where his father was a royal notary. At the age of eighteen he joined the Congregation of the Oratory and taught for a time in the colleges of his order at Pézenas and Montbrison and at the Seminary of Vienne. On the death of Henri de Villars Archbishop of Vienne in 1693 he was commissioned to deliver a funeral oration and this was the beginning of his fame. In obedience to Cardinal de Noailles Archbishop of Paris he left the Cistercian abbey of Sept-Fonds to which he had retired and settled in Paris where he was placed at the head of the famous seminary of Saint Magloire. He soon gained a wide reputation as a preacher and was selected to be the Advent preacher at the court of Versailles in 1699. He was made Bishop of Clermont in 1717 and two years later was elected a member of the Académie française. The last years of his life were spent in the faithful discharge of his episcopal duties; his death took place at Clermont on September 18 1742. Massillon enjoyed in the 18th century a reputation equal to that of Bossuet and of Bourdaloue and has been much praised by Voltaire D'Alembert and kindred spirits among the Encyclopaedists. His popularity was probably due to the fact that in his sermons he lays little stress on dogmatic questions but treats generally of moral subjects in which the secrets of the human heart and the processes of man's reason are described with poetical feeling. He has usually been contrasted with his predecessor Bourdaloue the latter having the credit of vigorous denunciation Massillon that of gentle persuasiveness. Besides the Petit Carême a sermon which he delivered before the young king Louis XV in 1718 his sermons on the Prodigal Son on the small number of the elect on death for Christmas Day and for the Fourth Sunday in Advent may be perhaps cited as his masterpieces. His funeral oration on King Louis XIV is only noted now for the opening sentence: "Dieu seul est grand." But in truth Massillon is singularly free from inequality. His great literary power his reputation for benevolence and his known toleration and dislike of doctrinal disputes caused him to be much more favourably regarded than most churchmen by the philosophes of the 18th century.
