A very scarce first edition of these works published in this format. In full calf binding with intricate detailing on the spine. This comprises of a translation of a selection of essays from Jean Baptiste Massillon who lived from 1663 to 1742. Includes Massillon's view on a number of religious concepts such as the existence of God and the immortality of the soul. With a letter to the reader from the translator as well as a chapter on the Life of Massillon.Two ink inscriptions. Dated 1826 and 1852 on front end paper and inside front cover. In full calf binding. Externally generally smart lightly rubbed in places. Some light marks to the boards. Light rubbing to the extremities. Loss to spine label. Light fading to the spine. Good colour with bright gold gilt on spine and corners. Marks on rear endpaper. Ink inscriptions on front end paper and front paste down. Spots to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound.
