Volumes 3 to 12 are labelled Bourdaloue vols. 14 to 20 Massillon and vols 21-22 'Sundrie Aut' but these seem to refer to periods rather than being solely the sermons of the named preachers. Most of the text blocks though tight and sound now with careful repairs by the rebinder have suffered some damp-staining. One volume lacks its title page and one page of text. With little stress on dogmatic questions and a focus on moral subjects the Bishop of Clermont describes the difficulties and secrets of the human heart with poetical feeling. This collection of sermons are for the period of lent. The binding is signed by Thouvenin to the spine. Active during the French restoration Thouvenin is credited with raising the standards of French bookbinding after the revolution and is best remembered for his revival of a style of binding that came to be known as the Fanfare style. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. This volume is from St. Peter's and St. Paul's Library in Bath. In a full red calf binding. Externally sound. Rubbed to the boards less so to the spine. The front and rear joints are just beginning to crack Very Good Dalibon hardcover
