A collection of Catholic sermons for Lent by Jean Baptiste Massillon the 18th-century Bishop of Clermont and Advent preacher Versailles in 1699. His sermons were popular for their moral rather than dogmatic themes. The spine and panel edges feature gilt decorations. With little stress on dogmatic questions and a focus on moral subjects the Bishop of Clermont describes the difficulties and secrets of the human heart with poetical feeling. This collection of sermons are for the period of lent. The binding is signed by Thouvenin to the spine. Active during the French restoration Thouvenin is credited with raising the standards of French bookbinding after the revolution and is best remembered for his revival of a style of binding that came to be known as the Fanfare style. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. This volume is from St. Peter's and St. Paul's Library in Bath. In a full red calf binding. Externally sound. Privately printed for Morris and sold by J. Nsibet in 1830.Rebacked with velvet boards and with brassed edges and clip. Contains a frontispiece of Massillon drawn by British artist John West Giles and with Morris's signed inscription to the blank before.A popular French preacher Massillon was praised by the Encyclopaedists for his eloquence and was also respected for his sensitive treatment to moral subjects with these sermons delving into righteousness and judgement. Morris translated French works by Lhomond and was a clergyman at Hockliffe in Bedfordshire. In the publisher's original cloth rebacked with velvet boards and with brassed edges and clip. Externally mostly smart with the odd fading patch to velvet. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine with a minor lift to head. Slight rubbing to brass decoration edges and clip. Marble end papers are bright and clean. Bookseller's stamp to rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages are mostly bright and clean with spotting to blanks frontispiece and title leaf.
