Klein-Oktav 17 cm. Einbände leicht berieben und teils fleckig innen wenig gebräunt oder braunfleckig vereinzelt minimale Wurmspuren ohne Beeinträchtigung des Textes vorderer Vorsatz fehlt in Band 1 im Ganzen ordentlich erhalten. In Band 7 letzte 3 Blatt fleckig durch Abklatsch anderer Druckseiten in Band 8 auf 100 Seiten Druckdurchschlag der Text ist aber lesbar. Nicht eingehend kollationiert augenscheinlich aber vollständig. Jeder Band mit einer Vignette mit Luther-Porträt und dem Motto: "Seine blätter verwelcken nicht" und umfangreichen Registern. Jeder Band auch mit einem Vorwort zur 2. Auflage im ersten Band auch mit dem Abdruck der Ankündigung "Avertissement" der Ausgabe für die Leipziger Buchmesse 1751. Die erste Ausgabe erschien 1738-1742. Auch antisemitische Schriften Luthers sind in dieser Ausgabe enthalten. In Band 9 sind die Tischreden Luthers in zwei Teilen auf über 1700 Seiten incl. Register - als nicht so ausgewiesener 10. Band - angebunden: "Des Hocherleuchteten Mannes Gottes D. Martin Luthers Geist- und Sinn-reiche auserlesenen Tisch-Reden und andere erbauliche Gespräche. Salfeld: Wiedemann 1745." Titelblätter in Rot- und Schwarzdruck. Der Herausgeber dieser Ausgabe Benjamin Lindner 1694 - 1754 war herzoglich Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeldscher Superintendent und Hofprediger. Nach seinem Studium in Leipzig u.a. bei Olearius war er ein begeisterter Vertreter des Halleschen Pietismus und wurde Pfarrer in Schönbrunn/Brieg Sorau und Saalfeld. The publisher Charles Cist 1738-1805 born Charles Thiel in St. Petersburg Russia; he graduated from Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg with a medical degree. He emigrated to the American colonies in 1769 at which time he changed his name. In 1773 he settled in Philadelphia and learned the printing trade. He was a prominent Philadelphia printer of the colonial and post-colonial era issuing works in both German and English. An active supporter of the revolution he had published Thomas Paine�s�The American Crisis he fled Philadelphia when the British took the city in 1777. He started the American Herald in 1784 and the Columbian Magazine in 1786. During the administration of John Adams he became the public printer and established a printing and binding firm in Washington D.C.Along with the printing business he was the first person to introduce anthracite coal to the United States facing opposition in Philadelphia where the public thought he was trying to sell blackened stones. This volume is good evidence of both the steady influx of German immigrants to American in the 18th century and of the American Lutheran church's resistance to acculturation. Many German Lutheran church leaders in the young United States saw German culture and true piety as inseparable and developed a strong resistance to Americanization. The Pennsylvania Lutherans especially clung tenaciously to German culture. Arndt and NAIP together locate only four copies one of which is lacking the final leaf. Rare. unknown

A small book measuring 5 3/4 inches tall by almost 3 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in original leather-covered wooden boards. The binding is quite worn and stained. Chipping at the spine ends. The leather is chipped and is darkened on the rear cover from having been damped and is peeling up where it is chipped revealing the wooden board beneath. The front pastedown is torn away revealing the front wooden board. Lacks the clasp. Several signatures a bit sprung. There is a chip at the fore edge of the title page affecting some of the lettering. The text is toned and stained. Bottom edge torn away from the bottom of the final leaf but there does not appear to be text missing. Worldcat also notes 252 pages. Printed in "Old German" type. Small hardcover 4 x 6.25 inches has paper-covered wooden boards and brown leather-covered spine. Paper covering has a dark brown and black speckled pattern. Spine has five slightly raised bands over the binding cords. Paste-downs are firmly attached to inside of boards and binding is not loose. Paper on outside of boards is somewhat wavy and while attached along edges paper floats slightly off the boards in the center. Edges of paper are worn and chipped; surfaces are rubbed. Wooden boards are somewhat wavy. Leather spine is worn and rubbed; top one inch of spine covering is missing. Spine is blank but could have once had a label. There are a few small old insect holes in the spine. Pages stand somewhat proud of boards on fore edges. All pages are completely intact and quite supple but all pages have a light tan moisture stain over most of their surface; paste downs also stained. Front paste down has two names in ink and one further that has been scratched out. Handwritten initials on top page edges. 200 pages. Carefully packed shipped in a box. Full title page: Doct. Mort.
