193126335Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Very Good-. c.1931. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket a decent enough copy moderately worn with some soiling to the bottom of the text block; there's also a weird bit of damage to the upper left corner of the rear pastedown where it appears that some previous owner had crudely cut away a bookseller's ticket unfortunately in a way that tore the cloth a bit and exposed about an inch of the top edge of the rear board adjacent to the spine the integrity of the binding however has not been compromised. An Irish-in-America family saga about a family who rose to success in the New York business world over the period from the 1850s to the early 1930s but whose dynasty is eventually brought low by intrafamily rifts and rivalries. Luther 1872-1951 was a prolific novelist and magazine-fiction writer; in addition to this straight novel he also collaborated with Ms. Ford on a couple of Los Angeles-set mystery tales. . 192615099Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Good. c.1926. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket reading copy shelfworn but intact; dust-soiling to top edge spotting on a few pages a bit of fraying to cloth at corners and spine ends damage to upper corner of rear pastedown where some lout apparently removed a bookseller's label with a razor blade causing some weakening to the binding at that point. Somewhat hard-to-find novel about a young energetic and honest city manager a WWI veteran who attempts to unseat the entrenched political machine in a suburb of New York City dubbed for purposes of this narrative "Suburbia"--could this be the first use of that term. It "doesn't pretend to be literature" wrote a contemporary critic but "the style is lively with better dialogue than is to be found in the average novel." Hanna 2252 . "If the exotic quality in Lafcadio Hearn was made authentic by observation that of John Luther Long 1861-1927 was largely the product of his imagination at times of high order and one that has not had proper appreciation either in fiction or drama. He was never in Japan but inspired by information which he received from his sister Mrs. Irwin Currell he established an atmosphere which has the illusion of reality and from it he evolved one character at least of supreme importance who has passed into world literature . Long continued his exotic romance in THE FOX WOMAN 1900 an imaginative novel of a crippled Japanese artist and his worship of a beautiful but soulless American woman to whom he is just a passing whim. She is the 'Fox Woman' of the Japanese who is without a soul. For her own pleasure she models him after the hideous Ni-O figures and in order to please her he tries to look like these grotesques until he grows as bestial as they and his soul becomes subject to his body just as before his ugly body had been made noble in the eyes of his wife Jewel by the splendor of his soul. Long uses effectively the utter submission of a Japanese wife to her husband's will in Marushida's present to Miss Carroway of Jewel for her body servant. The inevitable discovery on the artist's part of his abandonment by the goddess and the return of Jewel are told simply and naturally." - Quinn American Fiction pp. 516-518.
