A good complete copy.<br /> <br /> Rare early nineteenth-century edition of the Bible in Luther's German translation published in Pennsylvania. Apart from the 1828 New Testament very few copies of any of the Luther Bible editions published by Johann Georg Ritter 1772-1840 at Philadelphia between 1826 and 1829 survive. In his 1893 pioneering work The First Century of German Printing in America Oswald Seidensticker locates no complete Luther Bibles and only two editions of the New Testament which were published by Ritter in 1826 304 pages and 1828 541 pages. These were of course often bound with the Old Testament along with their full title-page. The 1828 New Testament is the only portion of Ritter's biblical editions that is widely held in institutional libraries. Expanding upon the work of Seidensticker the editors of The first Century of German Language Printing in the United States of America 1989 assign only four Luther Bible editions Old and New Testaments bound together to Ritter one in 1827 and three in 1829. OCLC however locates Luther Bible editions published by Ritter in all four years between 1826 and 1829. A careful comparison of the paginations reveals that Ritter's Luther Bibles appeared in several variants. The 1827 edition was re-issued in 1829 as a "Zweyte Auflage" with 20 additional pages of preparatory material immediately preceding the Old Testament. Variants of the present edition also appeared in which the Apocrypha 160 pages was separately paginated. Some surviving copies lack the Apocrypha and only contain the 936 pages of the Old Testament. Our careful review of OCLC locates only sixteen surviving copies of Ritter's Luther Bibles containing both the Old and New Testaments published between 1826 and 1829. Twenty-four copies of the separately bound 1828 New Testament have survived as well. The only two copies of our 1827 edition have been located: the University of Waterloo and the Wurttembergische Landesbibliothek. The results of our census are appended below.<br /> <br /> Johann Georg Ritter appears to have begun his career in Reading Pennsylvania where he printed two German-language works for the firm of William M'Carty and Davis in Philadelphia: Geschichte des americanischen Kriegs von 1812 1817; Hoch-Deutsches reformirtes A B C-und Namen-Büchlein für Kinder welche anfangen zu lernen 1818. He later moved to Philadelphia and set up his own shop Der Deutsche-europäischen Buch- und Kunsthandlung. Sammlung religiöser deutscher Gesaenge which he edited along with J. G. Schmauk was published in 1824 and has been tentatively attributed to Ritter after his move to Philadelphia; Karl Rudolph Demme's Letzte ehre des Christlichen Predigers in einer Christlichen Gemeine Philadelphia 1825 is the earliest work to appear under his imprint. He catered chiefly to the German-speaking Reformed community with religious works sermons and elementary school texts. He briefly published in 1825 a periodical edited by Johann Carl Gossler Philadelphier Magazin für Freunde der deutschen Literatur in Amerika.<br /> <br /> Provenance: Stamp of Library of United Theological Seminary at title. On offer is an interesting original pre Civil War and Civil War era manuscript diary journal and catchall scrapbook handwritten and compiled by we believe Luther Douglas b.1828 and then later his son Charles Everett Douglas b.1852 between 1855 and November 1862. Casual research finds Luther born in Plymouth and Charles in Sagamore Massachusetts. This is backed up with many entries suggesting easy visits and trips to Plymouth. The book is marked "Hired Mens Book" but that is crossed out and then is full of Douglas' writings and clippings save for a couple of pages used by a child Charles it appears. This unusual book has approximately 122 pages with entries a short scrap area: 10 pages have poetry cut from newspapers and/or magazines covering up the journal entries dated from January 1855 or so. This is followed by three pages of entries and then scraps on 19 Presidents not in chronological order are pasted down covering other entries. These were placed later as evidenced by the Abraham Lincoln clipping mentioning the President's martyrdom. The balance is a personal journal and diary centering around work related entries mostly for Sarah or Jacob Perry then Handel Tripp and many many more visits purchases trips and much more. There are a small number of ephemeral inserts one of particular genealogical interest as it is a slip of paper with the note: 'one man's family'. The book itself is a board covered book measuring approximately 6 1/4" x 7 3/4". A rare early work by Rhode Island labor organizer Seth Luther following his first printed work AN ADDRESS TO THE WORKING-MEN OF NEW-ENGLAND. and his AN ADDRESS ON THE RIGHT OF FREE SUFFRAGE published the previous two years. Seth Luther 1795-1863 was born in Providence Rhode Island and worked as a carpenter by trade. Like his earlier publications the present ADDRESS was printed from a speech Luther delivered this time before the Union Association of Working Men in Charlestown Massachusetts in late January 1834. Setting the tone for the speech in the first paragraph Luther rails against those "clothed in purple and fine linen" on the backs "of those who labor day after day." The present work is further described by the DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY as follows: "A denunciation of political and religious as well as economic oppression.the author laid down the following program of reform: universal equal education by means of manual labor schools supported at the public expense; abolition of all licensed monopolies; abolition of capital punishment and of imprisonment for debt.equal taxation for property; and an effective mechanic's lien law. His deadly sincerity forceful language grim humor and biting sarcasm made his pamphlets valuable weapons in the labor movement." <br> <br> This title is rare with this copy being the only one appearing in Rare Book Hub formerly offered by M&S Rare Books. One of the nicest examples I've seen of a massive 19th century family Bible.<br /> <br /> Interior: Toned pages are clear and bright light offsetting from leather turn-ins onto silk endpapers. A few small marginal tears not affecting text. Family records pages and presentation page are filed out. Pages have been beautifully preserved with only light signs of handling - a few smudges some tissue guard creases. A few spots of foxing at extremities.<br /> <br /> All in all a superior collectible example of a 19th century very finely bound illustrated family Bible that has been carefully preserved for generations with numerous Gustav Dore and other imminent artists' plates and with the photographs of initial family members who owned this beautiful Bible.<br /> <br /> . Good. Expertly matted and protected with Mylar sheet. This copy bears the faint signature in the lower margin of patentee Luther Gale. A broadside announcement of James Madison's granting of a patent for the improvement of the bark mill to Luther Gale. The bark mill was of vital importance to tanners since the bark was used in the tanning process. The broadside has a handsome woodcut version of the Great Seal of the United States. It was Madison along with Charles Pinckney who introduced the first U.S. patent law during the 1787 Constitutional Convention. Rare. Part sensational romance part serious study of cultural conflicts art vs. life and the nature and destiny of souls. Light soiling to exterior wear to spine ends and corners some chipping and edgewear to wrappers which are partially detached at ends dampstaining to wrappers and text block moderate toning lower corners lacking from first three leaves with no loss to text corners of some other leaves chipped or dog-eared early owner signature "Wm Bouvier" of "Bonner" to front wrapper and half-title. $750. Only edition. Henry Parish a New York merchant died in 1856 at age 69. He left a will made in 1842 that had been amended with three codicils signed by him some time after suffering a paralyzing stroke in 1849. These codicils were contested on the grounds of mental impairment. This trial attracted a good deal of attention and it involved testimony by several leading medical and legal experts. At time of this pamphlet's publication Bell was president of the Massachusetts Medical Society and a former superintendent of the McLean Asylum for the Insane near Boston.
