1939157547Shanghai: The Commercial Press Limited 1939. By one of the greatest western historians of Chinese art First edition first printing rarely found with the jacket of this historical study by John Calvin Ferguson a leading connoisseur of Chinese antiquities and one of the doyens of Chinese art history. "From the encounters between China and the West in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries John Ferguson reaped a harvest for himself and others that can only be described as exceptional" Netting p. 12. The ten extensively illustrated chapters address the major categories of Chinese artwork including bronzes stone monuments calligraphy painting jades ceramics architecture furniture textiles and what Ferguson calls "miscellaneous" pieces. Born in 1866 Ferguson travelled to China at the age of 21 to work as a missionary and quickly became well-known for his command of the Chinese language. Under the patronage of the Qing dynasty official Sheng Xuanhuai he became president of Shanghai's Nanyang Public School and advisor to the Ministry of Posts and Communications the Ministry of Commerce and the Imperial Chinese Railway Administration. In 1899 Ferguson bought Xinwenbao a small Shanghai newspaper and transformed it into one of the most important publications in the country. By the fall of the Qing in 1911 Ferguson was a leading western authority on Chinese art having developed a connoisseur's eye under the guidance of the Chinese collector Duanfang. In 1912 he was appointed to the committee charged with cataloguing the treasures of the Forbidden City in Beijing and he began working as a buyer for the Metropolitan Museum in New York. In 1915 he moved to Beijing permanently and undertook three decades of scholarly research into Chinese art history until his departure in 1943. Following his death in 1945 his sizeable collections were donated to the Met and to Nanjing University. His influence still resonates in scholarship and connoisseurship today and his writings remain seminal. As the preface notes multiple developments in the 1930s including the opening of the Forbidden City's collections archaeological investigations and the appearance of several major collections on the market afforded Ferguson exciting material with which to enrich his account. A second edition now much more widely available was published by the Commercial Press in 1940. Quarto. With over 200 half-tone plates. Original dark purple sand-grain cloth spine and front cover lettered in English and Chinese in gilt ornate gilt device on front board cream textured endpapers. With dust jacket. In brown cloth chemise. 2 pp. pen and ink on folded sheet with autograph envelope stamped "Washington D.C. Dec. 7 1922". 8vo. Advice to a Young Man: "All you need to do is work and save your money". Coolidge as Vice President writes a letter of advice to eighteen-year old D.M. Stoner. Reading in full:<br/><br/>"Here is what I think is the right change. It is a satisfaction to know that you are doing well. I shall take for granted that you are glad of my help so there is no need for you to come to thank me. Now be careful of your money. It does little good to earn money if none is saved. You need some life insurance. If you will take what is enclosed not present and get an 'ordinary life' policy with twenty years settlement period you will never regret it. This would buy $1000 and have some change left over. All you need to do is WORK and SAVE YOUR MONEY. Just two things."<br/><br/>A fine letter; Coolidge in typical to-the-point fashion expounds the virtues of frugality and hard work. unknown books
