Calvins Commentary was faithfully translated into English by Christopher Fetherstone a student of Divinity; this forms the basis of the Calvin Translation Societys edition. John Calvin the father of modern reformed theology was after Martin Luther a premiere leader in the Protestant movement. One of the goals of Calvins reformed thought was to unite a people with a sense of community and concern for one another he did especially by commenting on the imperative parts of the Gospel which motivated readers to contribute generously to common interest. The present commentary on the Acts of the Apostles is more historical than doctrinal; and hence does not contain so much profound theological discussion as some of Calvins other Commentaries. The leading topic is the progress of the Gospel under the inspired teachers to whom its first propagation was entrusted and the Constitution of the Apostolic Church including privileges enjoyed by its members. To this latter point the controversy is especially directed. From Spurgeons Commenting and Commentaries 1876 quoting Arminius I affirm that he excels beyond comparison in the interpretation of Scripture and that his commentaries ought to be more highly valued than all that is handed down to us by the Library of the Fathers; so that I acknowledge him to have possessed above most others or rather above all other men what may be called an eminent gift of prophecy The Translation appears to be well executed. It is perhaps not so strictly literal as that of the Commentary on the Romans which the Calvin Society has already published; but any difference in this respect is more than compensated by the general superiority of its style. There are occasional obscurities or mistranslations which the editor has endeavored as in the Commentary on the Romans to remove by footnotes; but on the whole it is believed that the present Translation will not suffer by comparison with that of any Theological Translation of the same period. 1923007859Washington D.C.: The White House 1923. Book. Fine. One Page. 8 1/2" x 11". December 17 1923 The White House - to Lew Wallace Jr. son of Lew Wallace Union general in the American Civil War governor of the New Mexico Territory and author of "Ben Hur"- "Dear Mr. Wallace The growth of thrift and saving in this country promises well for our future. Only through sacrifice and hard work can we attain the cherished things in life. This means we must work and save. The progress of the United States Government Savings System in giving to all our people an opportunity to invest in safe securities is most worthy. By placing Treasury Savings Certyificates on sale in post offices banks and trust companies the Government has made available to everyone a security of unquestioned soundness. Their widespread sale makes for better citizenship as each purchaser holds a stake in his Government. I believe also that the enlargement of a national Thrift movement will eventually stamp out the false and unsound practices of the swindler." A 25 line roughly 225 word letter that in the last paragraph goes on to talk about the growth of this system that "will result in increased happiness for the individual and in increased prosperity in general." A Fine letter under glass in period original frame and acquired directly from descendants of the Wallace family never before offered for sale. A superb association and a letter that speaks directly to Coolidge's sense of personal responsibility and frugality. The White House unknown
192934563New York: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation 1929. First Edition Limited Issue Specially Bound and Numbered and Signed by President Coolidge. With a photogravure frontispiece of President Coolidge and eleven other illustrations throughout. 8vo publisher’s original dark blue linen backed boards top edge gilt others uncut. 12 247 colophon pp. A fine bright and clean copy. SIGNED AND LIMITED SIGNED BY THE PRESIDENT. Coolidge speaks in an endearing way of his childhood in the woods and mountains near Killington VT and his process of political maturation and service to his community and nation. The book is ably written and articulate in its presentation and leads the reader to a new appreciation of a man often relegated to the obscure because of his quietude. Especially noteworthy in the present day is to read Coolidge’s own thinking about the methodology of the Presidency its struggles with the other branches of government and the absolute necessity for the President to bear the burden of that struggle in order to protect in an absolute way the rights and privileges of the executive and thus its equality with the other branches. All of this from a man who came from a simple country environment from local people and through service in both the legislative and legal bodies to his place in the executive branch. 184866814Tarrif as Essential to Secure Freedom COLTON Calvin. Public Economy for the United States. New York: A.S. Barnes & Co. 1848. First edition. With the inscription "Hon. J. Colamer with Respects of the Author" to the front free endpaper. J. Colamer was a Senator from Virginia. Large octavo. 7 8-536 pp. Publisher's brown cloth gilt spine lettering. Some light foxing throughout. A near fine copy. Born in Longmeadow Massachussets Colton was ordained in 1816 and worked as a pastor in western New York. He later became a professor of political economy at Trinity College Connecticut. He was a strong advocate for the protection of home industries and most of his writings reflect that. Public Economy for the United States is his most extensive work. Colton said he preferred 'public economy' over 'political economy' because the word 'political' had been abused. Political economy is "the application of knowledge derived from experience to a given position to given interests and to given institutions of an independant state or nation for the increase of public and private wealth. Freedom is a thing of 'commercial value' and the parts of the world most free require protection against those less so because the sole object of protection is to maintain and fortify freedom. Protection as opposed to Free Trade thus accords with the principles of the American Revolution" Dorfman II 778. Kress C.7332. HBS 66814. $1500 A.S. Barnes & Co. hardcover books
