Oblong 4to. 59 plates after drawings by Stevens numerous illustrations in text. 40 pp. Publisher's blue-green cloth front cover and spine stamped in gilt; spine ends repaired hinges reinforced and now sturdy some repairs to endsheets covers scuffed and extremities worn moderate soiling and scuffing final paragraph of Preface effaced Scarce first edition of this important treatise on the Shingle Style of architecture. Stevens 1855-1940 who supplied the plans and drawings illustrated here was a major innovator of the Shingle Style. He was prolific completing some 1000 commissions mostly along the Maine coast including approximately 300 homes on the Portland peninsula. In 1888 he formed a partnership with Albert Winslow Cobb who had previously worked at the Boston office of William Ralph Emerson another major innovator of the Shingle Style. Cobb who provides the text argues for the Shingle Style as a necessary reform to produce a more democratic straightforward and uniquely American style of domestic architecture. "Examples of American Domestic Architecture was nothing short of an impassioned clarion call for a new form of architecture that was aesthetically beautiful and purposely engineered to reduce the widespread social inequalities of the period. While the strident and occasionally ponderous idealism on evidence in Examples is widely considered to be Cobbs doing the books lyrical prose and innovative Shingle Style illustrations won international recognition and acclaim for the two architects" Stephen Abbott "John Calvin Stevens: The Early Years" in Maine Home DesignREFERENCE: Hitchcock 1240; Vincent Scully The Shingle Style pp. 113-120; Sprague The Mirror of Maine 32 William T. 187052647Shanghai: NP 1870. First edition. Hardcover. g- to vg-. 1/500. Octavo. ix 64pp. Rebound in 3/4 green buckram over marbled paper boards. Missing the original blue printed wrappers as issued. This extremely rare work is an English translation of a collection of scandalous anti-missionary and anticlerical polemics and statements originally issued in Chinese and circulated throughout the previous centuries with the aim of rallying support against the growing Christian influence in the country. Although predominantly aimed at Catholics the texts here are anti-Christian in general. The work contains a number of odd and interesting Chinese perspectives on Christianity as well as opinions of the Pope and includes bizarre and detailed references to supposed sexual practices of the clergy and lay people p.10-11.

The translator/publisher of the work is not named but has since been attributed to the influential American Presbyterian missionary and minister Calvin Wilson Mateer 1836-1908. As stated in the preface the idea of this publication in English was to expose westerners to the degree to which Christianity in China was treated with suspicion and hostility. The preface text is dated to August 18th 1870 in Tungchow now Penglai District Yantai Shandong Province China and is one of a number of telling aspects linking the work to Mateer who famously founded Tengchow College the predecessor to Shandong University and presided over the translation of the bible into Chinese Chinese Union Version.

Texts translated in this publication are: "Extracts from the Amplified Instructions on the "Sacred Edict" originally issued by the Yongzheng Emperor in 1724 "Authorities Consulted" a list of outlawed Christian work to be banned with the inclusion of the original Chinese text "A Collection of Facts Respecting the False Religion of Tien-chu" "Miscellaneous Quotations" "Evidence from Public Records" "A Death Blow to False Doctrines" and "Petition from Human for the Expulsion of non-Human Species".

Upon its publication this work caused such a scandal in China and within the international Christian community that according to late 19th century sources most of the original Chinese texts mentioned in this work as well as a majority of remaining copies of this work itself already limited in its publication were destroyed by mutual agreement of the Chinese authorities and the publisher. This fascinating work has largely been forgotten since the end of the 19th century. It is believed that no more than 100 copies of this text have survived from an original edition of only 500 copies.

Text throughout in English with some occasional Chinese text.

Ex-library binding with residue from a library sticker on the spine and covers. Spine with some rubbing abrasions and chips. Corners with some light rubbing and bumping. Covers with some light scratches and abrasions. Interior with some light sporadic water stains and age toning to pages. Library ink stamps and blind stamps on a few pages throughout including the interior covers and the title page. Interior back cover with library pocket pasted on. Page one with a repaired tear resulting in no loss of text. Gutters reinforced from the title page through the end of the preface section. Book block relatively tight overall. Wrappers in good- interior in very good- condition overall. Subtitle: "Published by the Gentry and People. 19283302423/06/1928.
“I do not choose to run†was a statement made by President Calvin Coolidge to the press on August 2 1927 on his decision not to seek reelection in the 1928 presidential election. Upon Coolidge's announcement the gathered media were stunned. The public too were shocked by the announcement. Many felt Coolidge could easily win a second full term based on ""Coolidge Prosperity"" the booming economy and a surplus of over $300 million. But Coolidge stuck to his position and in 1928 Herbert Hoover was nominated in his place. Coolidge’s refusal to run is famous and his statement announcing this is part of history.

But surprisingly it seems that Coolidge was giving no thought to what to do when he left the White House. Typed letter signed on White House letterhead Washington June 23 1928 to Herbert Pulitzer son of media magnate Joseph Pulitzer saying he has not yet determined what to do after he leaves office. “Thank you very much for your letter of June 19th. 1923007859Washington D.C.: The White House 1923. December 17 1923 The White House - to Lew Wallace Jr. son of Lew Wallace Union general in the American Civil War governor of the New Mexico Territory and author of "Ben Hur"- "Dear Mr. Wallace The growth of thrift and saving in this country promises well for our future. Only through sacrifice and hard work can we attain the cherished things in life. This means we must work and save. The progress of the United States Government Savings System in giving to all our people an opportunity to invest in safe securities is most worthy. By placing Treasury Savings Certyificates on sale in post offices banks and trust companies the Government has made available to everyone a security of unquestioned soundness. Their widespread sale makes for better citizenship as each purchaser holds a stake in his Government. I believe also that the enlargement of a national Thrift movement will eventually stamp out the false and unsound practices of the swindler." A 25 line roughly 225 word letter that in the last paragraph goes on to talk about the growth of this system that "will result in increased happiness for the individual and in increased prosperity in general." A Fine letter under glass in period original frame and acquired directly from descendants of the Wallace family never before offered for sale. A superb association and a letter that speaks directly to Coolidge's sense of personal responsibility and frugality. . One Page. Fine. 8 1/2 " x 11". The White House Paperback books
