The village and its Chapelle de Notre Dame constructed in 1479 is today a UNESCO heritage site as part of the St. James' Way pilgrimage route. The site first gained popularity as a pilgrim destination during the Middle Ages but by the early 19th century was in ruins first with the arrival of the Huguenots in the 16th century and pillaged again during the French Revolution. Not until the mid-19th century were funds raised by the bishops of Cahors used to restore the site. This guidebook would have been produced shortly after the restoration and provides handsomely illustrated descriptions of the village the numerous Chapelles and surviving relics. 1879039725London: C. Kegan Paul & Co 1879. First Edition . Hardcover. Poor/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. xx 550pp. ii 31pp. ads. With a short preface by fellow Oratorian John Henry Cardinal Newman. The author Hutton was a member of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri when he wrote this book. He was influenced by John Henry Newman to convert to Catholicism. Ex-library. Aside from a note in ink that reads "From His Eminence Cardinal Newman" text clean. The note is from an unknown hand and though apparently nearly contemporaneous with the publication of the book the claim cannot be verified. The book is bound in original dark brown cloth with bright gilt lettering to spine. The exterior is quite worn with heaviest wear - chipping and short tears - to head and tail of spine. Additional wear includes tears to cloth at joints as well as several mall bumps and wear spots in other places to cloth. Both hinges are cracked though text block remains largely square. Ppaer admits to some tanning along with a small number of leaves admitting to short unobtrusive tears. At some point when the leaves were opened several were left missing small pieces to outer margins though this isn't offensive and doesn't effect he reading of the next. Despite wear this very scarce original printing remains a perfectly usable copy that maintains some of the original charm that this era of Kegan Paul titles possesses

C.
