It is changing from day to day- Some theories are accepted one day and rejected another. Doctors often differ as to what should be done for the patients in differenT circumstances; which drugs are of value and whit are useless or even harmful. The particular drugs themselves are unimportant; it is the drugs that the nurse uses and sees used in her particular hospital which should be learned. Let this book be a guide rather to the study of any drugs emphasizing not so much what drugs are used but why and when and how."

SISTER ALMA died 1983 whose given name was Marie Alma Marie Louise Le Duc was a French Catholic religious sister. 1995536Berkeley Calif: Ten Speed Press 1995. Second edition. Hardback. Fine/Near fine. Unlike many other books that seem to try to sneak their edition number under the radar this one proclaims it up front as part of its title: “Maxfield Parrish: The Masterworks—Second Edition†by Alma Gilbert. Note: Gilbert’s name appears in slightly different form on the copyright page and in catalog entries than it does on the cover of this book—Alma M. Gilbert and Alma Gilbert-Smith for example. That could be because the difference between the second and first editions is so distinct to the tune of 24 more pages in this 1995 edition than in the 1992 version and with a short chapter at the end of the book detailing the differences in the illustrations. Indeed color illustrations is what this book is all about. Though it is not of a particular exhibition it is essentially a catalog much like an exhibition catalog of Parrish’s best and best-known works. There is a short biographical essay at the beginning another essay at the end about how his work has been evaluated since his death and there are some black and white pictures interspersed throughout but primarily the plates are reproduced in the vivid color for which Parrish is so well known with captions and explanatory text of greater and longer length. Parrish started studying art as a teenager and he only stopped painting at least as a hobbyist a few years before his death at 95. In between he mostly made his living as a commercial illustrator of everything from calendars to murals so there is no way Gilbert could include all of the estimated 900 of his works that have been recorded so far into this book. Instead she has sorted out her 200 plates into into chapters with titles such as “The Magazine Work†and “The Murals.†That chapter by the way has a four-page fold-out plate. Gilbert a curator and dealer specializing in Parrish weaves an essay about each topic through the pictures as well as providing information about the individual images.

Our copy of this book is essentially new with only a small penciled-in note on the half-title page causing us to list it as “Fine.†Otherwise there are no other marks or other flaws to the pages and the binding is similarly unmarred. The text block is tight and square. The dust jacket is Near Fine with some light shelf wear on the front and back and some slight curling along the top edge. Photos forthcoming or immediately on request. Ten Speed Press unknown
