2258
New York: Cupples and Leon 1921. Bound in original orange cloth with color pictorial pastedown on the front cover. This charming 16mo of 48 pages is a fine example of the outrageous number of Peter Rabbit books that traded on Beatrix Potter's work and name. Alma Hudson "borrowed" Miss Potter's beloved character and Richard Hudson followed suit with wonderful illustrations "inspired" by Miss Potter's art. This particular title is scarce in this exceptional condition retaining the original pictorial dust wrapper. Inscription on front free endpaper dated 1934. The dust wrapper has a few smudges on the rear panel. Else both book and dust wrapper are fine.
hardcover

1923290638Zarephath New Jersey 1923. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. A book of poetry by the first female bishop in the United States and founder of the racist Methodist sect the Pillar of Fire Church. Under Alma White’s direction in the 1920’s and 30’s the Pillar of Fire Church formed a close public bond with the KKK with the aim to liberate white Protestant women while also oppressing religious and racial minorities even regularly hosting cross burning ceremonies with the Klan on Pillar of Fire properties and giving speeches at Klan events promoting white supremacy. The introduction to this volume is quite bizarre as the author focuses on her husband’s conversion to the “unscriptural and Satanic†“new cult†of the Pentecostals and their subsequent estrangement. This long-form poem in rhyming iambic pentameter details their breakup in about 55 pages of text with small text illustrations plates reproducing hymns written by the author and a section of reproduced correspondence between the two at the rear. Truly a messy breakup. Red cloth with gilt lettering. OCLC notes ten institutional holdings. Very Good binding. unknown
