Considerata "la più bella ragazza di Vienna" e nota come grande seduttrice, Alma Mahler, vera e propria "musa del secolo", visse un'esistenza frenetica, governata al contempo da passione e rabbia, ingenuità e calcolo. Figlia del pittore Schindler e madre della scultrice Anna Mahler, ferrane fatale per alcuni, fonte d'ispirazione per altri, questa donna straordinaria svolse nel corso della sua lunga vita un ruolo di primo piano negli ambienti artistici di Vienna, Berlino e New York. Introdotta nei circoli della Secessione Viennese, la sua passione letteraria e un carattere intrigante esercitarono un forte fascino sulle maggiori personalità artistiche del XX secolo. Dal pittore Gustav Klimt al compositore von Zemlinsky, fino al direttore dell'Opera Gustav Mahler, che la sposò, tarpando ali e aspirazioni di una donna troppo inquieta per essere relegata a ruoli tradizionali. La scoperta di una relazione segreta con l'architetto tedesco Walter Gropius indusse Mahler a rivolgersi nientemeno che al dottor Freud. Fra i tanti futuri amanti della vedova Alma, sposatasi una seconda e terza volta, il più morboso si rivelerà Oskar Kokoschka, ossessionato dalla riproduzione maniacale di questa Sposa del vento. A lungo si è pensato che Alma abbia sacrificato a Gustav Mahler le proprie doti di compositrice, sfociate unicamente nei Lieder su testi di Rilke, Werfel e Novalis. Ma la verità va cercata nella poliedrica immagine di una donna che Thomas Mann soprannominò la "grande vedova": tanto densa quanto contraddittoria, e dotata di un vero talento per la costruzione del suo mito.
br. All'inizio del Novecento, Vienna è una città unica in cui l'arte in ogni sua forma illumina la vita dei suoi abitanti. Tra i fermenti della Secessione e la scoperta dell'inconscio, i viennesi scelgono di diluire le angosce politiche in una diffusa frenesia creativa. In quest'atmosfera irripetibile, si muove una giovane donna con l'incedere di una regina, lo spirito acuto e occhi come un mare profondo. Figlia di una cantante e di un pittore, Alma Schindler a soli diciassette anni diventa la Giuditta di Klimt, a venti si nutre di Nietzsche, Wagner, Platone, studia il greco, traduce i Padri della Chiesa, ma soprattutto compone: la musica è il suo elemento naturale. È una ragazza eccezionale, anche per via dell'idea elevatissima che ha di sé, fatto insolito nelle donne del suo tempo. Non la posizione, non il denaro: ciò che più l'affascina in un uomo è il talento, e la capitale ribolle di uomini di genio, che sono attratti da Alma come da una calamita. Perdono la testa per lei, che li investe della propria luce, ne esalta le capacità, ne moltiplica le energie, si fa dea per trasformarli in divinità. Perciò quando lei li lascia, la caduta è tanto grave. Klimt, Mahler, Gropius, Kokoschka, Werfel l'hanno amata, le hanno scritto lettere appassionate, le hanno dedicato opere, e da lei sono stati traditi, tormentati, abbandonati. Come se il desiderio inappagato di una carriera artistica autonoma potesse sublimarsi solo in ciò in cui la leonessa divorata da fantasmi di gloria non ha rivali: l'arte di essere amata. Ma mentre al suo fianco i suoi geniali mariti e amanti creano meraviglie immortali, Alma comporrà pochissimo e non dirigerà mai un'orchestra, marchierà a fondo le loro personalità seppellendo per sempre le proprie aspirazioni. «D'ora in poi il tuo compito è solo rendermi felice» le scrive Mahler in una lettera che è l'inizio di tutto, del compimento di un destino, questo sí, comune alle donne del suo tempo. Françoise Giroud, figura eminente della scena culturale e politica francese, in questa biografia non si limita a narrare la lunga parabola della «vedova delle quattro arti», ma restituisce un ritratto straordinario di quella Felix Austria, con i suoi evidenti splendori e le sue contraddizioni dolorose, che verrà di lì a poco spazzata via dal secolo breve.
