Roy. 4to., First Edition thus, with an engrave coloured frontispiece (original tissue guard present), illustrated title in red, blue and sepia, printed title, 30 full-page chromo-lithographed plates (all original tissue guards present), 7 engraved and coloured maps, and 4pp Family Register (partially completed by hand) engraved in red and black, some moderate damp-staining to lower half of first few leaves, some generally light and inoffensive age-staining (mainly marginal); handsomely bound in original full pebble-grain leather, boards with debossed decorative multiple frame border enclosing stylised floral lozenge, very neatly rebacked with old backstrip gilt laid down, gilt edges primrose endpapers, a very good, crisp, firm copy of a most attractive edition. The Family Register, placed between the Testaments as usual, is completed in manuscript for the Phillips family; James and Agnes Phillips were married at Salisbury Street, Glasgow in August 1863. With separate printed titles for the New Testament and Psalms. A SOLID COPY OF ONE OF THE FINEST AND MOST FAMOUS MID-VICTORIAN FAMILY BIBLES.
By his Majesty's Special Command, Appointed to be read in Churches, Printed by and for George Grierson, Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty, at the King's Arms and Two Bibles in Essex-Street, 1752 [ Titlepage for The New Testament dated 1736 ] Very interesting copy for this manuscript texte on guard : ""The Holy Bible". This is that inestimable Book, which came from Heaven to direct mankind in their way [... ] Some vain Criticks and half wistler Philosophers have presumed to make objections the stile and propriety of the inspired authors, ; and the reason of their Impudence was not only wicked [ ... ] want of Genius, Languages and Heading to enter into their awful beauties, to discover the exalted sublimity of their sens and relish the beauty, Graces of their expression. [... ] of Dublin [... ]desired the above writing to be put into all the Bibles that were in his House. Blackwell on the [... ]". Below we can read this ms. lines : "The above is my mother handwriting", signed "Howden". Scottish-born printer and publisher in Dublin, George Grierson (1679-1753) was married to the editor and poet Constantia Grierson. 8vo., on India paper, with 9 coloured engraved maps on 6 and a double-page chronological chart; attractively bound in publisher's black roan portfolio with drop sides all round, covers framed and blocked in blind and blocked and lettered in gilt, back with five raised bands ruled in blind, second compartment lettered in gilt 'Bagster's Teacher's Bible', gilt edges, black endpapers, portfolio mildly scuffed and rubbed at extremities else a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean copy. Bagster's Teacher's Bible is a facsimile reprint, with larger types, of the English Version of Bagster's Polyglot Bible first published in 1817 and which made Bagster's name. It corresponds page for page, and line for line, with the two well-known Pocket Editions. The text is that of the Authorized Version, printed in double column with the references in a third central column in Bagster style. In addition to the Old and New Testaments, this edition contains Cruden's Concordance, Chronology, Tables of Weights & Measures, Tabular Harmony, Comparative View of Quotations, and a set of maps engraved and coloured expressly for this edition. A particular feature is the set of Four Thousand Short Scripture Question with Answers, designed expressly for the use of teachers. The Teacher's Bible is an edition uncommon at best, and scarce indeed in this condition with wholly unrestored portfolio in unusually sound state. See Darlow & Moule 1081.

RARE Torah published by Va'ad Hatzala in Munich, 1947, and distributed gratis to European Jews who survived the Holocaust. Includes Rashi and Onkelos illuminations alongside the text. Includes all 5 books of the Torah as well as the books of Ruth, Eichah ("Lamentations") and Kohelet ("Ecclesiastes"). This particular copy of the Hebrew Bible was owned by Eliezer Kaplan, Israel's first Minister of Finance, and bears his name on the cover. [ATTRIBUTES:] 175x135mm, 194pp. Brown leather hardcover with ribbed spine. Gilt text and decorations on front and spine. [CONDITION:] Cover and spine edges rubbed. Stamp reading "Eliezer Kaplan, Min. of Finance" on front cover in silver lettering. Ink stamp on front white-page dedicates this book to the Israeli Defense Forces. All pages lightly yellowed. [SUMMARY:] This rare Bible, once owned by a key figure in Israeli history, has been preserved in good condition despite some shelf-wear.
