172749773Oxford: John Basket 1727. Hardcover. Folio. Modern rebind in black leatherette with gilt spine lettering and new endpapers. Unpaginated. Two engraved frontispieces historiated initials two small engravings single large foldout map "Map shewing ye Situation of Paradice". Modern rebind is pristine and tight; text block very good overall with only the first few and last few leaves a tad edgeworn and age toned else remainder quite bright and clean with only very occasional touches of foxing and occasional discreet vintage mends; small chip to lower corner of first frontispiece not touching image; map shows paper loss along right and bottom portions the whole neatly remounted to full-size sheet. Attractive early printing of this Oxford Bible first produced by the King's Printer Baskett in 1716 and whose son Thomas later produced them mid-century -- not a so-called "Vinegar Bible" the famous typographical error in Luke XX noting the "parable of the vinegar" corrected here to "vineyard." Other than "To the Most High and Might Prince James" opening single leaf the "Translouters to the Reader" section addressing the editions consulted and the entire text that follows is done in two-column format. The Old Testament and Apocrypha are followed by the sectional title page and frontispiece for the New Testament concluding with a lengthy index and foldout map. Inner flyleaf bears 18th century ownership signature of "Tomas Hawkes / His Book." A lovely handleable copy of this large lectern Bible hence " Appointed to be Read in Churches". Interestingly laid loose into this copy is a quite lovely unsigned 9" X 13½" ink-and-wash drawing of a small cottage on a hillside in the foreground with rolling countryside in the distance along with other ephemeral fragments used as place markers in this Bible: an 1849 receipt from draper and grocer John Sneath of Wragby England and several odd scraps torn from books and a newspaper ten pages from a tiny hymnal and portions of a letterhead and invitation. Spine gently and uniformly sunned a shade lighter two hardly noticeable small abrasions to rear cover offsetting from turn-ins to free endpapers as almost always but still a fine copy in a remarkably handsome binding with few signs of use.

The appealing binding on this treasured family Bible was created in Cambridge by Vere Stoakley who took over the workshop of J. Hawes on that craftsman's death in the late 1880s; he signed his work "Stoakley Late Hawes" to acknowledge this connection. The firm specialized in academic bindings to supply scholars from the university and continued in business until the 1920s. The present binding clearly is much more elaborate and beautiful than a simple scholar's binding and this is because it was a special gift presented to a beloved godson probably for his christening. Recipient Herbert Gardner Travers 1891-1958 grew up to be a decorated World War I flying ace who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his five aerial victories. After the Great War he worked in the airplane industry as a test pilot and flying instructor then became a commercial pilot in 1935. He returned to the Royal Air Force at the outset of World War II and was an acting squadron leader. As recorded on the flyleaf of his Bible he married Hermia Edith Margaretta Fraser in August 1919 and over the next 12 years they welcomed children Daphne 1920 Eva 1921 Elizabeth 1924 Christina 1926 and Edward 1931. Underlying everything is an explanation that reveals the inner state of the spiritual life or the ways and effects of God in in souls for their purification enlightenment and union with Him. A theologian and orientalist Haug was expelled from Strasburg for holding an assembly of Philadelphians and other mystic Separatists. He fled to the castle of Casimir Graf von Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berlenburg which had become a refuge for radical pietiests. Remaining there until his death Haug directed a Philadelphian organization that extended throughout western Germany. "He is said to have been a man of great piety and charming personality and was regarded by Count Casimer as a prophet of God" Schaff-Herzog.

"The new spirit of mystical Pietism. was fully revealed in the Marburg Bible 1712. The interpretation of type and prophecy in this follows the federal theology of Cocceius that of Canticles and Revelation Madame Guyon. It was the forerunner of a larger work in the same spirit the Berleburg Bible of 1726-42. projected and prepared chiefly by Johann Heinrich Haug. The text is a revision of Luther's with comparison of the English and French versions; the commentary reflects the views of the Philadelphian communities and quotes the mystical books current among them especially Madame Guyon's but its teaching goes back beyond Dippel and Petersen to Jakob Böhme or even to Origen in some points. It lacks unity of belief and of treatment; it is the work not of a single mystic giving voice to his inner convictions but of a propagandist sect with radical tendencies. It is not without value however from different points of view; it edifies by its continual application of Scriptural works to the spiritual life and it prepares the way for historical criticism by an appendix containing apocrypha Old and New Testament pseudepigrapha and postapostolic writings." Schaff-Herzog. Christopher Sauer the agent for the sale of the Berlenburg Bible in the United States used the text as a model for the first German-American Bible 1743.

1163 n.p. p. 19th century Leather with 4 raised bands 2 silver clasps 4 silver corner-pieces 2 silver chain holders with a ca. 2 meters long silver chain gilt-edged and gauffered text block 8° H. 185 x L. 12 x W. 7 cm. Staphorst chain bible containing the Old and New Testament the Psalms and Hymns and the Forms. Black gauffered leather decorated with silver and gilt-edged text block gauffered with a design of flowers. The silverwork is shaped in the common shell shape surrounded by some floral and ornamental designs. The shape of this silver work came from the Province of Friesland and was made in the city of Meppel. This design became very popular around Staphorst and due to that almost all the silver work on books from Staphorst is alike. The silver work on church books was seen as a status symbol the binding showed the social class and wealth of a churchgoer. The Staphorst Bibles were often worn at a rope or chain and belonged to the traditional costume for Sunday. The silver chain of this copy points out that it was the property of a wealthy person the lower class wore the Bible at a blue rope or in the case of mourning a black rope. Noordwijk B. van 2013. The results of an important competition at the Royal Society of Arts in Edinburgh in 1832 inspired the American activist Samuel Gridley Howe to research and develop his own embossed reading system for the blind which emerged in 1835 as "Boston Line Type." Drawing upon the methods of James Gall an entrant in the Edinburgh competition Howe created an alphabet of angular raised roman letters that "was said to be far less bulky and therefore less expensive than contemporary European roman-letter systems" PRINTING HISTORY p. 20. With the aid of a $1000 grant from the American Bible Society Howe purchased the first printing press for the New England Institution for the Education of the Blind today the Perkins School for the Blind and produced the country's first complete raised-letter Bible for the American Bible Society in 1842. The present Book of Psalms appears to have been printed with the first complete Howe-ABS Bible retaining the pagination of that production and was published separately with a new title page. ABS had published Selections of Psalms in 1835 and the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind a Psalms and Hymns in 1840 and 1848 this is a very early edition of the Psalms.
