Bound in heavy gilt-tooled leather with raised bands and gilt page edges this edition is structured for both public display and frequent home use. The double-column layout includes marginal scriptural references throughout with generous margins and wide spacing. All 15 full-page engraved plates are present printed on thick paper stock with numerous in-text illustrations. The interior is complete and tightly bound with moderate age-toning but no tears losses or annotations. The gilt decoration remains clear and the spine titling legible. Library book plate on inside front cover. Title page displays a large woodcut device. Pages are clean overall with occasional spotting and age toning; faint inscription above title page device; outer margin of pp.735-6 reinforced with contemporary paper. Fore edge of the text block is a bit rubbed. The bottom edge is stamped with a library name. Board corner tips neatly repaired. Johann Van der Waeyen 1639-1701 was a Frisian Minister scholar and controversialist. In 1677 he was forced to leave his position in Middelburg and move to Franeker. See M'Clintock Cyclopaedia of Biblical Lit. Among his better known works is a commentary on Balthasar Bekker's book on witchcraft. Van der Waeyen's interest in demonology is also apparent in this collection of tracts which contains two essays 485 pages on the demon AZAZEL who was associated with the Israelite scape-goat ritual. When not editing that journal he created this acclaimed interlinear word by word translation of the New Testament. The Preface tells that this was originally issued in parts during 1863-1864 from his print shop in Geneva Illinois but no copies are known. This is the first New York edition of the completed work. After Wilson's death in 1900 the International Bible Students Association bought the rights to his work and began publishing this text in 1902. It continues to be distibuted today by The Watchtower Society a.k.a. Watch Tower Society guaranteeing its continued influence among Bible students. Herbert HISTORICAL CATALOGUE OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE no. 1950 . Although the Library of Congress has a card covering a first New York edition of 1864 no copy has been located: whereas this copy IS copyrighted 1864 but lacks the statement "Electrotyped by B. Wilson Geneva Illinois." It was issued by Fowler and Wells in 1865". This copy shows only an 1864 copyright date. Only one copy of that Geneva Illinois first book edition is cited in the Book Auction Records and that was in 2023. This is a bi-lingual text with the Greek with an interlineal translation with a readable English text at the right margin. The address of Fowler And Wells is 389 Broadway.
