This unorthodox production replaces key words and phrases with well-executed engravings with the aim of simplifying reading of the much abridged gospels; though deciphering the intention of the symbols does on occasion present its own challenge - thankfully complete sentences with the original terms reinstated are provided at the foot of each page. . 12mo. A tight bright and clean copy. To fly-leaf is inscription; 'Mary Slee Aged 6 years 1852. Lord Wharton founded his Bible Charity in 1696 In his will he left land near York to support a Bible charity which was devoted to the distribution of bibles to children for use outside of the church or school. The terms of the will require the recipient to learn by rote the 1st 15th 25th 37th 101st 113th 145th psalms. The will also requires the Shorter Catechism also be included. Many thousands of Bibles have been distributed and the Trust still distributes Bibles to under eighteen year-olds. Philip Wharton 4th Baron Wharton born in 1613 was an English peer. A Parliamentarian during the English Civil War he served in various offices including soldier politician and diplomat. He was appointed as the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire by Parliament in July 1642. He was a Puritan and a favourite of Oliver Cromwell which is why from 1660 onwards he often ran into difficulty with the Crown. In 1676 he was imprisoned in the Tower of London and later in 1685 fled the country when King James II came to the throne. He died 4 February 1696. VERY GOOD INDEED. A nice fresh copy. Illustrated with maps steel engravings an additional chromo title page and a chromo printed Lord's Prayer preceding the New Testament. The Family Gallery pages have some inserted photos which can be removed without damage and none of the Marriage pages have been written in. The original binding is in excellent condition after professional restoration. The heavy bevelled boards are supported by internal cloth joints. The front board has a large central inset panel for the title. The decorative brass corners and clasps are all present. The spine has been replaced in black goatskin to match the original biinding and the original spine is re-laid onto the new leather. London, John G. Murdoch, hardcover

Both texts are printed in two columns and are red ruled throughout. The New Testament ends on S2 verso and is Herbert 683 ESTC R170626. The calf binding is mottled with iron salts. The boards are panelled with a two line roll and another narrow roll with the fittings for clasps with the hinge to the lower board in the continental manner. The arms of the clasps are lacking. The spine has raised bands with simple gilt tooling. The edges are trimmed close denoting a second binding and stained black. The endpapers are characteristic Herrenhut paste papers in a prussian blue combed design. Leaf B9 repaired at the foot with some loss of text. Inscribed on a blank before the title page 'Husey Gould the gift of Mr.Gould Febry. ye 9 1759.'
