Color plates throughout with illustrations of scripture scenes. Dual-column text with study notes and references in the footer. Verso states 'This Bible reprinted from new clear type is an identical reproduction of the edition published by the John Murphy Company.' While the verso reproduces the 1914 John Murphy copyright and no other date we believe it was printed in the early 20's. 8vo Smyth-sewn binding with overcast stitching printed on fine India paper with art-gilt edges and bound in black morrocco goatskin leather with gilt stamped lettering. With some spordic pen markings mainly confined to the Old Testament in the early few pages of Genesis the Books of Kings and early pages of Isaias along with a few pages in Matthew with mostly pencil. We have carefully paged through this copy and found no other markings; condition is entirely clean and fresh otherwise with crisp binding and very supple leather--an astounding survival after 110 years kept in vibrant condition by the original publisher's slipcase which shows some light wear around the edges. A great number of English Bibles and English versions were available by the end of the sixteenth century yet none were acceptable to Catholics. With priests hard to come by and many fellow Englishmen who knew their Bible well a need arose for an English Bible that would be acceptable to Rome and allow adherents to refute the errors around them. Gregory Martin an Oxford scholar began the work in 1578 and it would take him four years. He translated about two chapters per day from Latin into English leaving a heavily Latinized translation. His work was submitted for review to William Allen the first president of the college at Douai. The New Testament was printed in 1582 with the Old Testament delayed by financial reasons until 1609-10. The work was used by the translators of the King James Bible who borrowed quite freely from the Rheims New Testament.

References: Herbert 177; STC 2884; ESTC S102419 Rhemes Herbert 300; STC 2207; ESTC S101944 Doway; PMM 114; Daniell David. Berchem Invent. & Matham sic Sculp depicting two female figures holding La Sainte Bible; together with two cherubs one holding the Ten Commandments and Le Saint Evangile; the latter with his foot on a skull. This spectacular frontispiece combines the works from three profound engravers of Dutch 17th century publishing activities. There are numerous engraved illustrations throughout the text plus five added maps and plans. Four of these Paradis terrestre facing p. 3 part 1 Voyages des Israelites facing p. 86 part 1 Pais de Canaan facing p. 1 part 3 Voyages des Apotres facing p. 68 part 3 were designed specifically for this edition by N. Berchem; the first three were executed by A. Blotelingh and the last mentioned by I. de Visscher. The fifth inserted engraving is an unsigned map of Jerusalem facing p. 247 part 1 plus the Temple and Temple furniture and was copied from the Polyglot Bible printed in London in 1655-57. see Chambers Bibliography of French Bibles II; Seventeenth Century French Language.p. 482 ff. Woodcut printers device on title of Minerva an owl and olive tree with proverbial legend Ne extra oleas Nothing but the olive. Contemporary vellum spliced or splitting in some areas otherwise holding up well a robust volume.

La Sainte Bible printed by Louis and Daniel Elzevier of Amsterdam has been called without exception the most splendid French Bible ever printed Bibl. Sussexiana. However Brunet echoed by Graesse calls is très remarquable par sa belle éxecution typographique; mais la correction en a eté peu soignée et les notes ne sont pas estimées. A magnificent but not very correct edition. According to the catalogue of 1675 it was printed in four sizes of type Imperial France Real Veluws Real and Grand Mediaen. It was one of the few large-format productions of the Elzevier presses better known for their small Port-Royal New Testaments. The two printmakers who engraved Berchems designs for the Bible maps Abraham Blooteling 1640-1690 and Jan de Visscher 1632-1692 were highly respected artists who lived and worked in Amsterdam. These engravers must have been acquainted and had probably studied together in the workshop of Cornelis Visscher. Both most likely were selected or at least approved by Berchem as engravers of the map prints. Four of the five maps within the 1669 La Sainte Bible are ornamented with illustrations engraved from models by Berchem. Designs on the fifth map may also be by Berchem. Original dark greenish-blue straight-grain morocco gilt floral ruled borders raised bands with three angels in three compartments a.e.g. The binding is not signed but it is similar to other English bindings of the period possibly Staggemeier & Welcher. The spine foot says "Genesis to Numbers" and "Reeves's - Edition" in gilt. Early armorial bookplate of W. H. Battie-Wrightson Cusworth Yorkshire. Extensively annotated in ink holograph 3 1/2 pages on blank endleaves being the record of Thomas de Grey's family births marriages and deaths; he is the second son of Lord Walsingham "a clergyman married Elizabeth Fourth Daughter of the Hon.ble. Brownlow North Bishop of Winchester on the 12th of August 1802 by Special Licence at the Private Chapel at Winchester House Chelsea. . ." Very good. WITH A DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING of Philadelphia in 1790 and New York in 1820. The scene of Philadelphia shows churches buildings a harbor and shipping scene; on the reverse edge showing "New York" has various harbor buildings. Not signed; likely painted just prior to Leamington's owning this volume thus ca. 1953. The artist is not known. Often an American bookstore would import a volume acquired from an artist or a British bookstore. / Written in pencil "Dr. Carl J. Weber says no American scenes on double fore-edge paintings . . . Bot bought of Leamington Book Shop July '53. says this is the 3rd he has brought over." While a lot of time has passed one should never say "never" with regard to topics painted. The fact is that more and more paintings were painted and as that occurred the market was in America so scenes of American city views most being not so recognizable maybe became painted more and more as well. It largely depended on when the artists were painting and where they derived their commissions. Some artists were working independently of a bookstore or a binder and those painters also had their own patterns of what they painted frequently. Samuel Stevens not the artist here! was exactly that type of artist. / PROVENANCE: W. H. Battie-Wrightson Cusworth Yorkshire. William Wrightson 1752-1827 of Cusworth Hall Doncaster Yorkshire was a former member of Parliament 1784-1790; his son of the same name lived 1789-1879; it is unclear which person's bookplate the name refers. Brownlow North 1741-1820 former owner family member was appointed Bishop of Winchester in 1781. DNB. More recently a pencil note within the book indicates it was purchased from Leamington Book Shop July 1953. A bookseller's clipped catalogue description appears to be that of Leamington's Price: £18 10s. ca. 1953. A later pencil note 12/98 indicates this book was priced in December 1998 at $1600. 17631227760Paris: Claude Herirrant & Guillaume Desprez 1763. 1st Edition. Leather bound. Folio measuring 10x15 inches and being two inches thick. Bound in full brown leather boards ornately stamped in blind. Spine decorated in gilt with 5 raised bands. This is an older binding but is not original to the book as the endpapers are clearly more recent; we would guess this is a late 19th/early 20th century binding in the style of an 18th century binding. Covers mildly rubbed Title page slightly browned a few wormholes to the last couple pages of the index else the interior clean and tight. Overall the work is in very good condition. A collection of 500 engravings depicting the history of the world from the Biblical creation through the Second Coming of Christ. There are two engravings on each page. Each engraving measures approx. 6x5 inches and contains a caption with the appropriate Biblical verse. There is an index of the 172 illustrations in the New Testament section but none for the 328 of the Old Testament. The words "en Figures" are present on the half-title page but not on the title page. 001592Mainz: Gutenberg Johannes and Fust Johann Single leaf from the Gutenberg Bible the first substantial book printed with moveable type in Europe "justifiably treated as Europe's 'editio princeps'" White 'Editio Princeps' page 45 c.1455 approximately 285mm x 390mm in size. Lightly browned and lightly foxed central horizontal fold minor loss to top corner a couple of pin holes remnants of guard to one side but generally fairly clean. Forty-two lines in double column with Lombardic initials in red and blue and title letters NU and MERI alternating in red and blue. Latin text in Gothic script this leaf is from 'Numbers' partial 8:13 to partial 10:23 The purification dedication and setting apart of the Levites; Passover; the Lord instructing Moses to make two silver trumpets; Moses and Aaron set out the tribes of Israel on their journey; the Israelites follow the Cloud of the Lord; and the Ark of the Covenant is carried. Preserved in a vellum folder inside a leather drop back box with onlays. With the 1921 essay by A. Edward Newton about the Gutenberg bible though this is now loose leaves with the margins heavily cropped also contained in a vellum folder. We are unable to state for certain that this leaf is one of the so-called 'Noble Fragments' which were the leaves from the incomplete Gutenberg broken by the bookseller Gabriel Wells and sold off with in a portfolio by Stikeman with the essay by Newton but this seems the most likely provenance with this example also sharing the "neatly executed alternating red and blue lombard headlines" White 'Editio Princeps' page 135.
