The 1619 Synod of Dordrecht established a committee to prepare the new translation and leading Dutch scholars worked on it for nearly twenty years before Paulus Aertsz. van Ravesteyn ca. 1586-1655 published the first edition in 1637. The 6 maps and the engraved illustrations were produced to be inserted into Van Ravesteyn's folio editions. The series of 336 illustrations by Claes Jansz. Visscher with eight to one leaf are engraved by Cornelis Danckerts. With some browning but still generally in good condition and with large margins. The binding has been rebacked as noted and the "sharkskin" on the boards has some cracks and wear but the silver furnishings and gauffered edges are well-preserved. The tattered margins of the half-title and title-page were reinforced and extended with slips of paper at an early date there are tears repaired into two maps and one text leaf and other leaves have marginal defects some repaired. The paper shows some browning and foxing. Still generally in good condition and with large margins. The binding is scuffed but structurally sound and most of the tooling remains clear. The two anchor plates and two catch plates show a female head within ornamental decoration and they are connected by clasps with the names of the owner "Catrijna Maria Baey huisfrou" on the inside of the bottom clasp and her second husband "Kappiten Pieter Eebels" on the inside of the top clasp. Very scarce early edition of the Dutch States Bible as published by the Amsterdam publisher's "company" of Joannes van Someren Abraham Wolfgang Michiel de Groot and Hendrik and Dirk Boom. The present copy presumably was a gift to Catharina Maria Daey 1645-in or after 1689 on the occasion of her marriage in October 1681 to Captain Peter Ebels 1644-in or after 1689 in 1681. Their names are engraved on the inside of the silver clasps. Together they had 6 children. Peter Ebels was Catharina Maria's second husband she was married to Hermannus Folckers ca. 1639-1680 from 1664 until his death and the pair had 3 children.The present edition includes the New Testament and the 110 psalms of David but does not include the apocrypha. It is the first or one of the earliest editions of the Dutch States Bible published by the "company" of Van Someren Wolfgang De Groot and H. & D. Boom. It is very scarce as barely any copies of this edition are known in institutions. WorldCat mentions 2 copies one in the US and one in Australia while the STCN does not list this 1676 edition of the work as a whole and only lists two copies incl. 1 incomplete of the New Testament and only 1 of the Psalms.A more detailed overview of the provenance is available upon request.With a small auction catalogue clipping mounted on the back pastedown including some manuscript annotations giving details about the auction: "10-6-1925. Veiling van Huffelt's antiquariaat". The binding is somewhat rubbed and scratched mainly around the spine the engraved general title page is somewhat soiled. As was noted by the contemporary pamphleteer William Kilburne in his Dangerous errors in several late printed Bibles London 1659 part of a series railing against the poor-quality Bible printing work of Henry Hills and John Field this edition omits Psalms Ch.143 v.4 in its entirety 'and there are many other faults as I am well informed of very great notoriety'. With an engraved title included in the pagination displaying the figures of Moses and Aaron within an architectural design an engraved portrait frontispiece of William Addy two further engraved divisional titles also included in the pagination of the New Testament Holy Dove and the Four Evangelists and the Psalms King David playing the harp and a terminal blank. Contemporary gilt-tooled and panelled black morocco A.E.G. marbled endpapers. Some rubbing to extremities bumping to corners short split at head of spine upper hinge starting. With old bookseller's ticket tipped to verso of FFEP further bibliographical notes tipped in at end to blank fly-leaf. Early ownership initials of W.R. to verso of engraved frontispiece with a further name neatly erased. The first complete Bible to be produced entirely in shorthand engraved throughout by John Sturt and including the metrical psalms of Sternhold and Hopkins translated from the King James Authorised Version by English writing master and stenographer William Addy c.1618-c.1695. Addy's shorthand system was extensively outlined in his Stenographia or The art of short- writing compleated in a far more compendious method than any yet extant London 1684. As he himself acknowledged it owed a great debt to the system of Jeremiah Rich d. c. 1660. Darlow & Moule transcribe a note from the B.M. copy which explains the method of production: 'This Bible in Stenography my Brethren at sight and all others skill'd in ye Art of Sculpture know it's Engraven; but in a Peculiar Manner. It was written by Mr. Addy in ungum'd Ink burnished on the wax and then run through with the Engraver by John Sturt'. The old bookseller's description tipped into this copy refers to the work as the 'Pepys shorthand Bible' referencing J.W. Carlton's 1933 article "Samuel Pepys his Short-hand Books" Transactions of the Bibliographical Society. New Series Vol. XIV p.83 1933; however Pepys copy is described as featuring 'a rapturous dedication to William of Orange' which was not added until the 1689 reissue confusingly with the title continuing to display the 1687 date of this Bible. One of three slight variant editions published in 1687. All are rare; ESTC locates copies of this edition with imprint 'Printed for the author and Peter Story' on verso of the second leaf at just four locations worldwide Cambridge NYPL Oxford and Senate House. Bound in full 20th century mottled calf. Plain new endpapers. 4 raised bands to spine blind decorations to compartments. Board edges patterned. Black and gilt label & titles to spine. All title pages present. Final 3 pages Psalms with very old repairs and one page inserted out of order. Psalms complete but Creed incomplete at end of book So ends at page 92. All sections dated 1608. Robert Barker. The noted issues with this copy are: f68 marked as f96; f173 with pasted down border note; f329 last of Ezekiel misbound in Daniel; f330 present but with loss of a large are of text; f434 mispaginated as f435; f435 has large ink stain to verso; f464 small closed tear; f483 torn with some loss; f490 mispaginated as f499; f534 complete but torn; Book of Psalms: 1st 10 pages unpaginated; p28 mispaginated as p27; p86 mispaginated as p66; pps 87/88 exchanged with pps 89/90; The final two leaves have been repaired and the final leaf with moderate loss to the edges. As is inevitable with a Bible of this age there are also tiny tears nicks and edgewear and a general darkening of the pages nevertheless s a very nice example. This edition of the Geneva Bible received the nickname Breeches Bible because on its erroneous translation of Genesis Chapter 3 Verse 7. The text reads: 'Then the eyes of them both were opened and they knew that they were naked and they sewed figge tree leaves together and made themselves breeches.' Each page is numbered to the recto only if at all so these are actually leaf numbers so we refer to fn. To confuse matters further the book of psalms numbers each page not leaf. Full collation: ii 1-554 1-98 1-91.pp Collation: lacks blank q1 q2-Zzz10 A-L2 A-G3. Our copy substantially conforms to Darlow & Moule 225a. Chaque page n'étant numérotée qu'au recto voire pas du tout il s'agit en fait de numéros de feuilles nous nous référons donc à fn. A choice copy of the third English edition of the Greek Septuagint printed by John Field at Cambridge bound uniformly - in handsome seventeenth-century sombre bindings - with Field's companion New Testament in Greek a reprint of the Thomas Buck edition Cambridge 1632 and the 1650 first edition of the Scottish Metrical Psalter. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England was published by Roger Daniel 1653 with the second appearing in Walton's Polyglot edition of 1657. This edition published by John Field Printer to Cambridge University is also the first to contain the praefatio paraenetica of J. Pearson. Issued in two slight variant forms with differing Greek titles this is the issue without the Apocrypha. The presence of the Scottish Psalter printed by Evan Tyler of Edinburgh at the end of the final of these three volumes combined with the later Scottish provenance makes this cataloguer wonder if these volumes were used - and perhaps even bound - in Scotland. Ford Warminster†dated 1747 and with a small but elaborate bookplate of William Thomas Smedley 1858-1920 the noted collector of Elizabethaniana and Bacon; his library was sold in 1924 to Henry Clay Folger and the Folger library collection today includes nearly 1500 volumes formerly owned by Smedley. First edition second issue/state called the “she†Bible because of the reading of Ruth III 15: “she went into the citieâ€. In addition because of the small hole in C6 Matthew 26:36 it is impossible to tell whether the word Judas or Jesus is printed. The King James version of the Holy Bible is arguably the most important book ever published in English. Preparation of the Royal Version took more than 5 years and was laboriously attended to by over 50 translators and researchers. The final translations were then exchanged and reviewed reaching a final committee of six. Supervision of the printing was carried out by Miles Smith and Thomas Bilson. Although the Royal Version appropriates much from the Tyndale Coverdale Geneva and Bishops’ Bibles it is unquestionably regarded as the greatest literary translation of the Bible ever produced. 16353642A very scarce edition of the Louvain version of the Bible printed in Troyes by Nicolas Oudot the younger of the two founder brothers of the dynasty of printers in Troyes. It is a small format printing consequently a fairly chunky book which is illustrated throughout with charming woodcut illustrations. The BN has a later edition published by Nicolas Oudot Troyes 1678 which is also the Louvain version edited by François Véron and revised by Antoine Girodon Chambers 1453. While this copy has suffered rather rough and ready solutions to maintaining its integrity - no easy matter considering its considerable girth - it remains an appealing object if not one in original condition.
