The Gaelic Bible was first printed by the Bible Society in 1807 when the British and Foreign Bible Society BFBS printed a corrected edition of the SPCK text. In 1826 a revision of the Bible was made by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland and was printed with the Metrical Psalms Sailm Dhaibhidh by SPCK and BFBS. Bagster's Greek Bibles are prized among collectors for their clean Greek typography the integration of variant readings and their influence on the distribution of biblical texts in England during the early Victorian era. This example features both the Septuagint text based on the Vatican edition and the New Testament based on Mill and Griesbach making it a desirable reference point for students of textual criticism and for collectors of early English biblical scholarship. Hand colored lithograph from the deluxe edition of Robert's 'The Holy Land Syria Idumea Arabia' the greatest lithographically illustrated work of the 19th century. This hand tinted lithograph was produced by Louis Haghe the finest lithographic draughtsman of his time and probably colored by him in a very small edition. <br /> <br /> The image depicts a series of low white chapels at the top of Mount Sinai the sacred site to which God summoned Moses and the Israelites. Moses received the tablets with the Ten Commandments here descending and relaying the laws to the people. <br /> <br /> David Roberts 1796 - 1864 was a Scottish painter who traveled to Egypt in 1838 on the recommendation of his friend and colleague J. M. W. Turner. He went up the Nile River through Egypt and the Holy Land and arrived in Jerusalem in 1839. Roberts left from Beirut in May of 1839 having traveled through Lebanon.<br /> <br /> Roberts recorded his impressions of landscapes temples and people in a series of sketchbooks and watercolors and working with Haghe as lithographer produced these lavish plates. The 'Holy Land' issued over a period of 7 years from 1842 to 1849 was funded through advance subscriptions Queen Victoria being the first subscriber. <br /> <br /> Cut to the edge of the image and mounted on card in imitation of watercolors as issued. 13 3/4 x10"; card measures 21 3/4 x 16 3/4". Card slightly chipped at corners. OCLC: 927477663 records a copy at the Wellcome Collection.<br /> <br /> A stunning image among the most popular of famous sites in the Near East. F.G. Moon unknown

George Borrow 1803-1881 spent most of his thirties as a representative of the British and Foreign Bible Society first in Russia and then in the Iberian Peninsula from 1835 to 1840. "In Spain civil war made his expeditions risky while the hostile attitude of the authorities coupled with his own provocative approach led twice to his imprisonment. . In Madrid the Bible Society financed the printing of St Luke's gospel translated into Spanish Romani by Borrow and Gypsy friends" ODNB. His account of his adventures The Bible in Spain 1843 was his first literary success. Other works included Lavengro The Romany Rye and Wild Wales.<br /> <br /> These are a set of Borrow's marked proofs for this second edition of the Gospel of St. Luke first printed in Madrid 1837. Gathering C is marked Revise May 27/72 with five corrections on pp. 59 and 69; gathering B is marked 2nd Revise Aug. 9/71 and corrects the running head Majaro to Majaró on the left hand pages with some 22 corrections to the text; gathering E is marked 10th Revise Feb. 9/72 with one marginal note on p. 116. <br /> Of this 1871 proof OCLC records only the copy at the Huntington with corrections in George Borrow's hand bound in polished brown calf marbled end-papers gilt top; purchased from Maggs Cat. 1924 item 443. Collie and Fraser note a handful of other proofs citing copies at Fales NYU Berg NYPL Brotherton Leeds Liverpool and in the Norfolk Record Office Norwich.<br /> A rare proof from Borrow's late career returning to a work from his early adventures.
