1824AQ21699London: William Darton 1824. 180pp. With an engraved frontispiece and two further engraved plates. Original publisher's red roan-backed marbled boards ruled and lettered in gilt. Rubbed surface loss to bumped corners and head of spine upper joint split. Near contemporary inked gift inscription to recto of FFEP plates a trifle browned and spotted offsetting to title. The first edition of a juvenile tale of libricide sure to make the blood of any bibliophile run cold. The chance discovery of a printer's woodblock representing the head of an elderly man leads to the reading of a manuscript account of the great-grandfather of a young group of siblings relating his time as a student at Christ's Hospital from 1725-28 alongside a collection of his poetry. It is mentioned that the young pupil spending a day in London is given the task - by a tea-dealer - of picking apart old books which have been purchased as waste paper and folding the sheets into bags. As for the manuscript poems it is agreed that they should be sent to 'the well-known friend of youth on Holborn-Hill' for publication - a thinly veiled reference to publisher William Darton. OCLC records copies at eight locations California Cambridge Florida Oxford Pennsylvania Princeton Toronto and V&A; COPAC adds no further. Darton H271 1. First edition. 12mo. William Darton hardcover

1829189543Hartford: Packard & Butler 1829. First edition of this pamphlet advocating for women's education by the seminary's founder. This copy has the gift inscription on the front free endpaper "E. Tomlinson from S. Brigham"; the recipient was likely Eliza Tomlinson perhaps 1817-1846 and the giver Susan Brigham 1804-1892 both listed among the pupils of the seminary at the rear p. 81; 84. Brigham became a teacher the following year and was preceptor of the Female Seminary at Uxbridge Massachusetts from 1831 to 1835. Harriet Beecher Stowe who roomed with Brigham in 1829 described her as possessing "a fine mind and most unconquerable energy and perseverance of character. From early childhood she has been determined to obtain an education and to attain to a certain standard. Where persons are determined to be anything they will be. I think for this reason she will make a first rate character" Hedrick p. 55. A list of 61 women's names is written on the rear pastedown in pencil perhaps those of students. Catharine Esther Beecher 1800-1878 promoted the domestic role of women and viewed them as suited to the role of teaching in the same way as they were suited to motherhood. The Hartford Female Seminary was one of the first significant American educational establishments for women. Octavo. Original blue printed boards brown cloth backstrip edges uncut. 1825355490725434London: Simpkin 1825. First Edition. Hard Cover. London: Simpkin and Marshall 1825. First UK Edition. An extremely rare first edition with just one copy registered on Worldcat and COPAC British Library. 8vo. Bound in the publisher's pale boards with the spine skilfully repaired with a new spine with paper label. Period ownership note in ink to the head of title of Ann Burchell. 5 2-236pp. Text block starting to split but holding scattered foxing. Overall about VG. Scarce. Esther Hewlett was a prolific author of children's books tracts and books on domestic economy. It is of interest to note that Cottage Comforts first published here in 1825 reached its eighth edition by 1831 and its twenty-fourth edition in 1864. It is a household management manual addressed to the labouring classes embracing the spirit of both Mrs. Beeton and Dr. Spock. Cottage Comforts was one of the author's earliest works and included chapters on renting and furnishing a cottage brewing and baking keeping animals care and education of children and the treatment of illnesses. Although it opened with a sententious section on the virtues essential to domestic comfort Cottage Comforts was full of practical advice the author had tried out her own recipes and was forthright on such subjects as childbirth and constipation. A rare first edition. Further photographs available upon request. Simpkin hardcover
