189744152New York State 1897. Very good. Detailed student notes apparently from a teacher's training course on the laws governing education in New York state in the late 1890s with briefer sections of notes on the geology and geography of New York; one page is dated 1897. Includes sections on Corporal Punishment "If a teacher wishes to punish a child she may do it without the parents' consent. Parents or teacher may be arrested for undue severity. Cicero said "Do not punish in anger"; the Compulsory Education Law and the authority of truant officers "The law provides that parents may be fined or imprisoned or both"; and the "Physiology Law" requiring that "physiology relating to alcoholic drinks and other narcotics and their effects on the human system shall be taught yearly in all grades in the public schools". <br /> <br /> In addition to assorted notes practice tests and copied poems a printed page from the December 12 1891 School Journal is laid in including several sample lesson preparations and "Suggestions to Teachers" on narcotics and stimulants: "There is a general feeling on the part of the little ones under your charge that the use of alcoholic liquors is wrong. To prove to them that its use is deleterious to the mind and body is a hard thing for you to do. They must take this on faith and you are to be the faith-builder for the little ones."<br /> <br /> The name of the notebook's author and owner appears in a list of 1900 Normal School graduates in Suffolk County issued as part of the annual New York State Superintendent's Report: Esther Alice Andrews of Patten's Mills successfully completed the English Course. A fascinating look at turn-of-the-century teacher's education. Wraps. 8vo. Cardstock covers cloth taped spine. Edgewear and creasing to covers; cloth tape torn at ends. Author's name and the title "School Law" written in pen on front cover. Commercial ruled notebook about two-thirds filled with handwritten notes in pencil and pen. 1937415421Brooklyn New York 1937. Hardcover. Near Fine. Small oblong album measuring 4.5" x 6". Brown leather album with "autographs" stamped on the front board. Album is near fine with some edgewear and toning.<br /> <br /> An autograph album compiled by Brooklyn New York native Esther Blackoff in June of 1922 while attending P.S. 109. The album begins with "Labor Conquers Everything" written in glitter followed by a page with her name and the date also written in glitter. From the notes it appears this album was created as a remembrance album for their graduation as most of the messages are signed "your sister grad-u-8." The messages are happy notes full of well wishes congratulations and memories from her school mates. One message reads "may your life be as bright as Belmont Ave. on Thursday night;" another reads "I wish you all the luck that God will grant you." The album is completely full with 83 pages of notes from classmates and teachers. One note was written later in 1937 by Esther's daughter Marion and reads "may your life be ---- never be ---- always be ---- never be xxxxx your daughter Marion Blackoff Cooper."<br /> <br /> A nice autograph album detailing a young woman's school days in the 1920s. hardcover

192015557Barse & Hopkins. NY. 1920 Book size about 6 by 9 1/2 inches. Bound in brown cloth with front cover embossing. This is the High School Yearbook for Miss Esther Shelton of Washington Missouri. She was a member of the Class of 1923. This is one of those early Yearbooks where the publisher provided an outline of what to enter in the book and then the student filled-in the book in whatever manner they chose. This is a superior example of the type with student names printed programs writings from classmates Some with drawings in color packaging of products A copyright 1916 chewing gum wrapper--an actual Chesterfield cigarette flattened--a hair net package--and several others party invitations fancy napkins photographs various programs related to school work and much else. The book is so crammed with various material that the binding is severely strained in places. About 34 photos pasted in with written captions. I could say this is rare but it is actually unique one of a kind as all these old hand-made yearbooks were. It is impossible to properly describe this book there is so much in here--and even the five photos I have included with the listing just touch on the contents. A reference book for Women's Studies showing how the young girl of 1923 was educated. The book is crammed beyond the capability of the binding and is about 3 1/2 inches thick. This is one volume in a collection of some 65 of these old Yearbooks ranging from the late 1800's to the 1920's mostly from the Midwest which will be in my book seller catalog titled 'Women'. Bit of mouse nibbling to the edges of a few pages with no loss to any material inside. VERY GOOD Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.
