194424515New York: Harper & Brothers 1944. First edition. Fine in very good jacket. First printing of Krauss's first book terrifically illustrated by abstract expressionist Ad Reinhardt. This is a marvelous nonsense story about a man whose wife constantly changes things around so he never knows where anything is. Cleverly illustrated by Ad Reinhardt in deceptively simple two colors on every page such that the child's eye is immediately drawn to the essence of the picture. This was also Reinhardt's first book and his last children's book. Reinhardt went on to become a leading abstract painter. Re-issued in 1963 with illustrations by Marc Simont this first edition is scarce. 8.5'' x 6''. Original beige cloth with red-stamped vignette and spine lettered in red. In original unclipped $1.50 dust jacket. Illustrated by Reinhardt in blue and pink throughout. 32 pages. Bookshop ticket of San Francisco based Metaphysical Library and Bookshop on front pastedown. Jacket with some careful restoration. Book beautiful with just a touch of soil. Harper & Brothers unknown

197744083London: Hutchinson 1977. First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo original cloth. Signed by Ruth Rendell on the title page. Near fine in a fine dust jacket. On Valentine's Day four members of the Coverdale family--George Jacqueline Melinda and Giles--were murdered in the space of 15 minutes. Their housekeeper Eunice Parchman shot them one by one in the blue light of a televised performance of Don Giovanni. When Detective Chief Superintendent William Vetch arrests Miss Parchman two weeks later he discovers a second tragedy: the key to the Valentine's Day massacre hidden within a private humiliation Eunice Parchman has guarded all her life. "Rendell writes with such elegance and restraint with such literary voice and an insightful mind that she transcends the mystery genre and achieves something almost sublime" Los Angeles Times. The novel was filmed twice: The Housekeeper starred Rita Tushingham as the illiterate maid and La Cérémonie directed by Claude Chabrol where Sandrine Bonnaire played the role. Description: " 'Contemporary Lithographs' was a pioneering scheme set up by Robert Wellington who had helped make Zwemmer's the centre for modern art in the 1930s and the artist John Piper. Their inspiration was to take good quality prints into schools across Britain. Together they commissioned and produced two series of prints with in some cases Piper taking on the task of coaching artists who were not familiar with the auto-lithography process. They involved many of the Zwemmer artists as well as their own friends: Edward Bawden the Nash brothers Eric Ravilious Graham Sutherland and John Piper himself. This beautifully produced book reproduces all the works for the first time and traces the scheme from its ambitious beginnings to its closure at the start of WW2. With its companion The School Prints it will appeal to anyone interested in Modern British Art and sit perfectly alongside several titles in the ACC Design series." -- with a bonus offer-- . Description: "This beautifully produced book tells the story of The School Prints series. It was dreamt up towards the end of WW2 when Brenda Rawnsley and her husband Derek had the idea of bringing contemporary art to young children by putting 'good' art into schools. Initially British artists were commissioned to produce one lithograph each John Nash Paul Nash Henry Moore John Tunnard Barbara Jones L. S Lowry and many more. These were issued in a series of standard-sized prints to which schools could subscribe. A war widow at the age of 30 Brenda took up the project again immediately after the war and embarked on an even more ambitious project to sign up the great European artists of her day. She travelled extensively around France - not an easy task at the time - and signed up the likes of Picasso Braque Leger Matisse and Dufy to contribute works 'pour les enfants anglais' as Picasso said. Tragically the project was not a commercial success many of the schools finding the works too avant garde and modern. However The School Prints project should be seen in the context of attempts to democratise British art in the mid-20th Century as well as part of the renaissance of lithography that was taking place at that time. This book and its companion 'Art For Everyone' will appeal to anyone interested in Modern British Art and sit perfectly alongside several titles in the ACC Design series." -- with a bonus offer-- .
