First Edition 8vo size blue clothbound hardcover with black titles on the spine; 240 pages plus sections of black and white photographs on glossy stock. Illustrated endpapers by Saul Steinberg. The book is part history and part travelogue of Israel in the early days of the modern state. The author takes the reader on a tour through Haifa Tel Aviv and Jerusalem explores the growing language and many different experiences. Some excerpts from the book: "For years people have talked of the Jews as a nation of sorrow. Jews have fallen victim to persecution and mass murder. Israel is a country built not only on the graves of the dead but on the humor of the living. The Jewish genius for laughter has become part of the very business of national life." Page 13 "The farms of Israel are like farms nowhere in the world shaped by a people hungering for roots and the immortality of the land. To most of its pioneers the thing of greatest beauty in Israel lies in the kibbutz." Page 85 "Every kibbutz has little toddlers with black hair blond hair red hair running around like chickens. Nurses and teachers assigned to the children's quarters take care of them. Parents play with their children after work and at night each mother tucks her own children into bed." Page 94 "On a Friday afternoon on the 14th of May 1948 in a museum room in Tel Aviv a short stocky labor leader with a strong face and cowl of white hair read Israel's Proclamation of Independence.
