Part of the reason is location for New Guinea is a remote island the size of France and Italy combined just east of Indonesia and hovering above Australia in the South Pacific. . The appeal of New Guinea art lies in its extraordinary resourcefulness and creativity. For centuries the people there have made objects in order to communicate and interact with the spirit world. Many of the objects based on myths and ancient religious themes are the equal of many of the world's great sculptural masterpieces. Some were made in response to health or fertility or rites of passage; others signified an individual's stature in a village; and others invoked the end of a mourning ritual or warded off evil and sickness. . The art of New Guinea can be seen in its fullest and richest depiction ever in this elegantly presented two-volume publication. More than 600 masterworks come from Marcia and John Friede who have devoted decades to the study and pursuit of these works. ."

CONDITION: Both volumes are fine in fine dust jackets. The slipcase is near fine with some rubbing and scratching at the bottom along with a minor corner bump at the head at the back. According to the colophon this book is a facsimile of a very rare cookbook printed by the Bowman Publishing Company of Evanston Illinois sometime before 1922. The copy was acquired from a British book dealer around 1950 and was part of the collection of Dr. Lall G. Montgomery President of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. It is known that as a student Dr. Montgomery acquired French German and Italian translations of 'Alice in Wonderland' in an effort to gain facility in translating medical literature. His interest in these translations sparked a growing hobby of collecting 'Alice' in its numerous translations. This interest naturally extended to gathering editions with illustrations by various artists along with personal letters written by Lewis Carroll parodies books about the 'Alice Books' and special editions of 'Alice'. The recipes are accompanied by sepia yellow and black illustrations by American artist Elling William "Bill" Gollings 1878-1932 who studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and is best known for his works featuring cowboys. From the Collection of Stephen and Nancy Farber. We couldn't trace any copy of this edition in the UK.
Der Drucker paperback
