An extended thanks to Joseph Henry Jackson and all of the contributors a special thanks to institutions for loaning material for reproduction including the Bancroft Library the Argonaut Book Shop and the State Library at Sacramento. The Newhall Land and Farming Company originally a ranch in the 1880s is a land management company that developed Valencia California. James F. Dickason was the president and chairman of the board chosen by the founding family and participated in the planning of Valencia. Under his leadership the company grew to become one of California's top 10 largest landholders. Ruth Waldo Newhall was a journalist and writer and wife of Scott Newhall scion of Newhall Land's founders and together she and her husband are credited with the vision of building Valencia.
