197187881Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company 1971. First Edition stated presumed first printing. Hardcover. Very good/Good. Christopher E. Jones Author photograph. The format is approximately 5.875 inches by 8.625 inches. x 242 2 pages. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations. A Glossary of Newspaper Terms. Index. Ms. Adler wrote ''A Day in the Life of The New York Times'' an account hour by hour of what the newspaper's staff did to put out the issue of Feb. 28 1969 a date chosen arbitrarily on which there was no earth-shaking news. Ruth Adler kept the staff of The New York Times informed about its own milestones and behind-the-scenes adventures and shaped the legends and lore of The Times for other journalists and students for 33 years as editor of the newspaper's in-house journal Times Talk. Behind every news story there is an untold -- or rarely told -- tale of the reporter's personal experience: the hazards of covering a war or a riot the grind of the campaign trail a correspondent's travails with foul weather bad food crazy hours unworkable communications and implausible expense accounts. Ms. Adler chronicled these tales and countless more routine doings for the newspaper's 5000 employees in a house organ that was one of the best and most widely read periodicals on the practice of journalism. Ruth Adler was born on July 10 1910 and graduated from Smith College and attended the Sorbonne in Paris for a year before joining The Times in 1934. In 1947 she was asked to establish an internal news publication for the staff. Arthur Hays Sulzberger the publisher gave her a small staff and complete autonomy to design edit and produce Times Talk. When Ms. Adler retired in 1980 a full issue of Times Talk was devoted to her. The New York Times NYT is a national daily newspaper based in New York City. 1976B1084London: Hutchinson 1976. First. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. From the publisher:
In 1976 this acclaimed novel by Ruth Rendell was the winner of the Crime Writers Association Gold Dagger Award.

In a gloomy cellar the figure of a palely beautiful woman makes no move when the man advances on her from the shadows puts his hands around her neck and strangles her.

Two men rent flats in the same house but their paths rarely cross. Arthur Johnson is quiet 50 and a bachelor. No one knows of the dark lusts that bind Arthur to the pale lady in the cellar that compel him to kill again and again. Anthony Johnson is a young student studying psychopathic tendencies going to lectures and writing a thesis. His lover is trying to make up her mind whether she wants to stay with her husband or leave him to be with Anthony.

This copy is near fine in black cloth with gilt titles on the spine. The book is excellent but for the age toning on the text which happens to be common for this particular edition. No other marks or damage. The unclipped DJ is also excellent with just the slightest edge wear.
Signed by the author on the title page. As an early Rendell title it is quite scarce signed.
. EB20.
