1897113179New York: Harper & Brothers 1897. Octavo original pictorial tan cloth. First edition. A novelette and six short stories by a popular American author who did not find favor with subsequent critics. All have rustic settings though in various parts of the country thus disqualifying the book as regionalistic and dialect writing and most have a light tone but "The Unlived Life of Little Mary Ellen" is about a mad woman who carries a doll about with her believing it to be her baby until she finally comes to believe it has died. The story has some effective touches of weird atmosphere; it is "sad and touching. the most complete piece of work which has as yet come from Mrs. Stuart's pen." - Laurence Hutton in Harper's New Monthly Magazine Vol. 95 Issue 570 Literary Notes p. 2. Wright III 5306. Early gift inscription on front free endpaper a bright near fine copy. #113179 Harper & Brothers unknown books

1986128064New York: Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1986. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author on the title page: "For dearest Ruth / Much love / James." Purdy has also signed the page a second time.

Ruth Ford was an American stage and film actress sister to the bohemian surrealist Charles Henri Ford. She began her career as a model for the likes of Harper's and Mademoiselle and early on was a member of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre. With Welles' help she went on to land work in Hollywood. Her best known films include "The Keys of the Kingdom" 1944 Anthony Mann's "Strange Impersonation" 1946 and Frank Perry's "Play It As It Lays" 1972.

Her persona was as important-if not more important-than her career in film and on the stage. For more than 40 years her apartment in the Dakota the gabled fortress-like building on 72nd Street welcomed the likes of William Faulkner Tennessee Williams Edward Albee Terrence McNally Stephen Sondheim and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to the pair's collaboration on "West Side Story." Ford adapted James Purdy's "Malcolm" 1959 for the stage in the early 1960s.

Very Good plus in a Near Fine dust jacket. Slight spine lean spine ends lightly bumped slight rippling to the front pastedown and a few tiny corner creases.

From the estate of Ruth Ford. Weidenfeld and Nicolson unknown books
