1939171116028Chicago: Reilly & Lee 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good . Neill John R. First printing with first printing dust jacket octavo size 272 pp. The thirty-third and last of the "canonical" books in the fabulously popular "Oz" series the nineteenth written by Ruth Plumly Thompson. It was decided to include the phrase "The Wizard of Oz" in the title to coincide with the release the same year of the MGM film starring Judy Garland. In fact it seems the book was written with the film in mind as the story focuses on the characters who appeared in the first book. This a lovely copy a wonderful way to complete a set for any Oz collector.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full tan cloth black lettering and designs to the backstrip full-colour pastedown on the front board black and white illustrated endpapers 16-page gatherings replete with black and white illustrations issued without colour plates; octavo size 9.25" by 7" 272 pages. Dust jacket shows the original $1.50 price the front and back panels mirror the book's pastedown the back flap lists the Oz titles through this title number 32.

___CONDITION: Volume could almost be called fine; the binding is clean the black on the spine deep and unrubbed the front pastedown has bright colours and is perfect with no rubbing or other defects the corners are straight the text block is strong and square with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and the volume is entirely free of prior owner markings including the "Belongs to" page which is blank; the only condition issues we see is a hint of wear to the bottom edge the book is slightly cocked and there is a small light stain to the fore-edge of the text block. The unclipped dust jacket is very good plus to near fine with some minor wear at the usual spots head and tail of the spine and where the panels meet the flaps the worst being a small triangular chip where the front panel meets the head of the spine; also some sunning to the spine.
