After she was settled in Hillville she realized that her problems there were doubly difficult because she must solve them under the prying surveillance of the entire community." The author's literary career began when her first novel "Straw in the Wind" was awarded the 1936 Avery Hopwood Prize for fiction; it came to its conclusion with this her second and last book.
