Reliure de l'époque fortement endommagée. Texte encadré d'une frise, orné à chaque page (format demi page) d'une belle gravure sur bois très animée, illustrant un épisode de l'Ancien ou du Nouveau testament dont 2 planches comprises dans la pagination (Tabernacle, temple de Jérusalem) en tout 242 FIGURES, 32 pages étant manquantes dans notre exemplaire. Sans les pages 13 à 16, 19 à 22, 33 à 38, 47-48, 87-88, 121-122, 149 à 152, 217 à 220, 235-236 et 261-262. Library stamp on main title accompanied by a second perforated library stamp near the printer's device. The outer edges to the first few prelims are slightly worn. Pages are generally clean with occasional mild marginal spotting. A small piece is missing from bottom margin of the final leaf. Page 492 is a bit soiled. Bound in brown library buckram; title and shelf number in gilt on the spine; pocket on inside front cover. Hermann Witsius 1636-1708 was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker 1675 Utrecht 1680 and Leiden 1698. EB11. His Aegyptiaca first printed in 1683 compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. He argues against the theory put forth by Sir John Marsham and by John Spencer that Jewish traditions were derived from Egyptian practices. This second edition has been expanded from the first. Spine tail cap is professionally restored. Several areas on the outer hinges especially near the tail cap are neatly repaired. The bottom corner of the rear board is bumped Interior pages show some uniform age-toning / tanning foxing. A few very minor marginalia/corrections are present in an old hand. The bottom marginal corner of leaf Dd2 is repaired. Latin text/translation of the Biblical books at one time ascribed to Solomon including Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Songs Wisdom of Solomon Ecclesiasticus Wisdsom of Sirach. Included are copious notes by the learned French scholar Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet 1627-1704 Bishop of Meaux tutor to the Dauphin and court preacher to Louis XIV of France. Ecclesiasticus contains parallel Latin texts of the "Sixtina versio" and the "versio Vulgata." The final section in the book "supplenda in Psalmos" supplies notes on several psalms. A small piece of paper with a note written on both sides in French and dated 1860 is loosely inserted inside the front cover. The second edition of the England LXX but the first edition with the preface by John Pearson 1613-1686 who in 1689 published his famous Exposition of the Creed and in 1673 was consecrated Bishop of Chester. This is the true first edition with the Pearson preface Darlow & Moule 1671. They go on to note: "This statement was probably borrowed from T. Brett's Letter Shewing Why our English Bibles Differ so Much from the Septuagint 1743 p. 47. Horne Manual p. 54 says: "Field's edition was counterfeited page by page by John Hayes a printer at Cambridge who in 1684 issued an edition though keeping the original 1665 date." Reliure ancienne en plein vélin muet solide, vignettes fraîches. Bel exemplaire malgré les défauts signalés, offrant tout le charme des livres anciens imprimés en gothique allemand.

Franciscus II Raphelengius Gold-tooled mottled calf ca. 1720 sewn on 4 cords each board with a small central flower ornament and a frame of double fillets the spine with a lozenge ornament in each of the 5 compartments a roll on each raised band and at the head and foot and further double fillets gold-tooled board edges mottled edges. With 4 letterpress title-pages for the Pentateuch early prophets major and minor prophets and Psalms etc. and decorations built up from arabesque typographic ornaments. Set in sephardic meruba Hebrew types unpointed with the imprints in semi-cursive rabbinical but the place of publication in meruba. 4 volumes bound as 1. 264; 227 1 blank; 238 2 blank; 287 1 blank pp. vols. 1-2 with arabic numerals 3-4 with Hebrew. A pocket-sized edition of the Hebrew Old Testament in four volumes volume 1 containing the Pentateuch or Torah volume 2 the early prophets Joshua Judges Samuel Kings volume 3 the later major Isaiah Jeremiah Ezekiel and minor prophets and volume 4 the Psalms Job Song of songs Ruth Lamentations Ecclesiastes Esther Daniel Ezra and Chronicles. It was produced by Franciscus II Raphelengius grandson of Christoffel Plantin and son of one of Europe's first great Hebrew scholars Plantin's son-in-law Franciscus I Raphelengius 1539-1597 who helped prepare Plantin's magnificent 1572 Polyglot Bible succeeded to the Leiden branch of Plantin's printing office and became professor of Hebrew at Leiden University. Plantin himself had produced the Dutch Republic's first Hebrew book there in 1585 and Raphelengius produced many more beginning in 1588.With occasional very minor foxing or faint discolouration but otherwise in very good condition. The spine and joints are worn with superficial cracks a repair at the head and a small tear at the foot and the sewing is slightly loose.
