Discussion center around anti-semitical writers including those concerning Hitler and writings by Dr Alfred Ernst Rosenberg A. C. Cuza of Romania. Further topics include the Talmud and the historical facts of Jews living under Roman persecutions Rabbi Nathan and Jews doomed for circumcising his child; Rabbi Meir and his teachings and how Jews are to deal with enemies during warfare. Jewish leaders including the Rav in Yuma Hillel Rabbi Akivah and Rabbi Simeon are discussed in detail. Stapled spine. 15 pages. Pages are generally clean with occasional mild marginal spotting. A small piece is missing from bottom margin of the final leaf. Page 492 is a bit soiled. Bound in brown library buckram; title and shelf number in gilt on the spine; pocket on inside front cover. Hermann Witsius 1636-1708 was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker 1675 Utrecht 1680 and Leiden 1698. EB11. His Aegyptiaca first printed in 1683 compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. He argues against the theory put forth by Sir John Marsham and by John Spencer that Jewish traditions were derived from Egyptian practices. This second edition has been expanded from the first. Included are copious notes by the learned French scholar Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet 1627-1704 Bishop of Meaux tutor to the Dauphin and court preacher to Louis XIV of France. Ecclesiasticus contains parallel Latin texts of the "Sixtina versio" and the "versio Vulgata." The final section in the book "supplenda in Psalmos" supplies notes on several psalms. A small piece of paper with a note written on both sides in French and dated 1860 is loosely inserted inside the front cover. Beautifully bound convolute with the Old and New Testament and a psalmbook for use in the Dutch Reformed Church including the sheet music for playing and singing the different psalms. Although the three different biblical and religious works were not published at the same time namely in 1870 and 1884 they were all published by the so-called Nederlandsche Bijbel-Compagnie which was a joint between the Amsterdam Bible printer Brandt and a Haarlem Bible printer namely John Enschedé. This beautifully bound copy is a neat example of one of these Bible publications of the Nederlandsche Bijbel-Compagnie.Binding a little worn especially around the spine edges and cornerpieces the rings with some light wear paper edges a little soiled some soiling from the silver-plating on the endpapers. With 4 letterpress title-pages for the Pentateuch early prophets major and minor prophets and Psalms etc. and decorations built up from arabesque typographic ornaments. Set in sephardic meruba Hebrew types unpointed with the imprints in semi-cursive rabbinical but the place of publication in meruba. 4 volumes bound as 1. 264; 227 1 blank; 238 2 blank; 287 1 blank pp. vols. 1-2 with arabic numerals 3-4 with Hebrew. A pocket-sized edition of the Hebrew Old Testament in four volumes volume 1 containing the Pentateuch or Torah volume 2 the early prophets Joshua Judges Samuel Kings volume 3 the later major Isaiah Jeremiah Ezekiel and minor prophets and volume 4 the Psalms Job Song of songs Ruth Lamentations Ecclesiastes Esther Daniel Ezra and Chronicles. It was produced by Franciscus II Raphelengius grandson of Christoffel Plantin and son of one of Europe's first great Hebrew scholars Plantin's son-in-law Franciscus I Raphelengius 1539-1597 who helped prepare Plantin's magnificent 1572 Polyglot Bible succeeded to the Leiden branch of Plantin's printing office and became professor of Hebrew at Leiden University. Plantin himself had produced the Dutch Republic's first Hebrew book there in 1585 and Raphelengius produced many more beginning in 1588.With occasional very minor foxing or faint discolouration but otherwise in very good condition. The spine and joints are worn with superficial cracks a repair at the head and a small tear at the foot and the sewing is slightly loose.
