1812051359Philadelphia: Published by Bradford and Inskeep 1812. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 12mo. xii 238 pages. The binding measures 7 inches tall by just about 4 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in full tan leather. Binding is rubbed has bumping at corners and a small carved mark at the bottom of the rear board. The outer hinges have been reinforced with Japanese tissue. There is a red label pastedown and gilt bands. They are not raised. Endpapers are foxed. There is writing on the front/rear flyleaves and the front pastedown. "No 11" "Miss Scott Book 1878" The ink is rather heavy in some parts of the name making it hard to read. Text is toned has foxing. Some pages are chipped at the fore-edge and others show light damping. The inner hinges are secure. The corners of the text block are rounded and appear to have been trimmed that way. Text is toned and foxed and has some damp stains especially at the fore edge. Lindley Murray 1745-1826 was an American Quaker grammarian and lawyer and his was one of the most popular readers in America in the early and mid-19th century. He was born in Pennsylvania but lived for a time as a child in North Carolina until his family moved to New York in 1753. He studied law and became a successful lawyer but his interests lay in science and literature and in the 1780s he retired to England to write and to follow literary pursuits.
