Marguerite Rawalt was a lawyer and was instrumental in getting women admitted to the American Bar Association. Judith Hillman Paterson 1936-. In 1980 Paterson began working as a freelance writer and an adjunct professor at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. She would later host write and produce The Writer's Tale a series in which she interviewed noted writers for the university's television station. She began publishing a number of articles and essays on such topics as alcoholism mental illness and feminism as well as several essays on St. Thomas More and authored Be Somebody: A Biography of Marguerite Rawalt who was a key figure in the women's rights movement in America. Dr. Marguerite Rawalt 16 October 1895 - 16 December 1989 was an American writer and lawyer who lobbied in Congress on behalf of women's rights. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 30 years and served on the board of directors for numerous groups relating to women's rights issues. In 1943 Rawalt was elected as president of the Federal Bar Association the first woman to hold the position. During 1943 she also served as president of the National Association of Women Lawyers. In 1966 Rawalt became a member of the National Organization for Women and acted as their first legal counsel. She served as President of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women and as the first president of Business and Professional Women's Foundation an educational and research institution which she helped found in 1956. Rawalt was appointed to President Kennedy's Commission on the Status of Women in 1961 and subsequently participated in other commissions on the status of women including the Citizens' Advisory Council on the Status of Women and the District of Columbia Commission on the Status of Women.
