19847270Andoversford: The Whittington Press Manor Farm 1984. Imperial 16mo. 19.5 x 14 cm. 44 pages. Text set in 12-point Bell. Printed in black the illustrations in reddish-brown on Zerkall Silurian paper. Bound by Smith Settle. FIRST EDITION one of 250 unnumbered copies. There was also a deluxe edition of thirty copies with the illustrations colored by hand and enclosed in a black clamshell box. One of the most charming of late 20th century cookbooks. The text evokes the ordinary manner in which recipes are collected and adapted in the home kitchen over time and the illustrations perfectly match this depicting the family mid-meal the author bending into the reach in for ingredients or picking fallen fruit while hanging laundry. Judith Verity obtained material for the lino by pulling up part of the floor of the village school nearby and the first job in printing was to scrape the cement off the back of each cut. Bound in decorated fabric red and blue with a title label printed in red inset on the upper board. Fine. A most lovely book. The Whittington Press, Manor Farm unknown books
