From Introduction: The Heritage Trail from Horse Creek to Davenport follows the trails of Davenport’s history across northeastern Polk County through beautiful forests and over the sand hills. At first it was a faint trail traveled by the Indians and Spaniards. Later the army enlarged and added to the existing paths which were widened and paved. Steel rails created easier ways for early settlers to penetrate the interior of the state. There is much to see along the way and many interesting people to meet. Thank you for joining me on this journey. Welcome to Davenport! First I would like to clarify some ambiguous names such as the City of Davenport the two Lake Davenports and the two different names for Horse Creek. The designation for many of the roads may seem confusing. Even though my family arrived here in 1911 and I have lived here most of my life I was unsure about some of these issues. I have talked to many older residents eagerly gone to governmental agencies musuems libraries and on field trips searching for the answers to these and other questions. With each question answered the puzzle pieces have fallen into place and the picture has become clear. On this journey we can turn back the hands of time and experience history as it happened. For those who are new to the area I hope the information provided will help you find your way around northeast Polk County more easily. Information about the location of the neighboring villages and other documents may be found in Appendix 3. Hands of Time Enterprises, LLC, (2013). paperback books
