2006CNJL976Octon France: Verdigris Press 2006. Limited Edition. Folio. Fine. Rothchild Judith. Number 9 of 30 copies folio size 21 pp. signed by Marie Rouanet and Judith Rothchild all text in French. Magie Blanche White Magic is a feast for the senses an invitation to share twenty years of epicurean delight at the restaurant "Le Mimosa" in Languedoc a place of tangible emotion as translated in this book through a series of engravings and original texts. Judith Rothchild's eleven mezzotints elevate the subjects in their technical achievement. The sumptuous plates enclose in circles or squares the commonplace subjects: olives cheese langoustines wine bottles and mushrooms frozen in velvety black shadow and dappled light.

The colophon calls this the "fruit of a collaboration between creators of diverse origins sharing a deep love of Languedoc." Marie Rouanet's original French text is a poetic response to Rothchild's mezzotints and to the soulful history of the restaurant created by Bridget and David Pugh.

___DESCRIPTION: Original loose leaves unbound in the French style in a fall-down-back box designed by Lisa Knoblauch with a silkscreen of green mimosa leaves on a yellow ground and with a printed paper label to upper board and backstrip 11 mezzotints on 10 full-page spreads embossed mimosa leaf vignette to title-page text in French; Vendome Romain type Hahnemuhle paper leaves are folio size 16" by 12" 1 2-21 pp first limited edition this number 9 of 30 copies signed by the author and illustrator to the colophon.

___CONDITION: A fine copy; like new in a like case. 2005699482005. Ohio State University Press 2005. 9780814209738. Ohio State University Press 2005. 9780814209738. Rowbotham Judith; editor. Stevenson Kim; editor. Criminal Conversations Victorian Crimes Social Panic and Moral Outrage. Columbus: The Ohio State University Press 2005. xxxii 318 pp. ISBN: 9780814209738. Hardcover as new excellent condition. $65. In the climate of social panics that characterized so much of the Victorian period there was keen consciousness of the threats a variety of crimes posed to social stability. Conversations about crime particularly via the media were a major feature of Victorian Britain's daily life and it was through such conversations that people learned about the nature of crime and criminality as well as about the individuals who committed crimes or were merely guilty of socially offensive conduct or "bad" behavior. The essays in this book set out to explore the ways in which Victorians used newspapers to identify the causes of bad behavior and its impacts and the ways in which they tried to "distance" criminals and those guilty of "bad" behavior from the ordinary members of society including identification of them as different according to race or sexual orientation. It also explores how threats from within "normal" society were depicted and the panic that issues like "baby-farming" caused. Victorian alarm was about crimes and bad behavior which they saw as new or unique to their period-but which were not new then and which in slightly different dress are still causing panic today. What is striking about the essays in this collection are the ways they echo contemporary concerns about crime and bad behavior including panics about "new" types of crime. This has implications for modern understandings of how society needs to understand crime demonstrating that while there are changes over time there are also important continuities. Judith Rowbotham is senior lecturer in history Nottingham Trent University. Kim Stevenson is senior lecturer in law at the University of Plymouth. Rowbotham and Stevenson are founders and directors of SOLON: Promoting Interdisciplinary Studies in Bad Behavior and Crime. unknown books

Number 4 of 10 de luxe copies total edition 50 oblong octavo size 22 pp. signed by the author and artist. James Sacre b. 1939 former professor at Smith College now residing in Montpellier is a French poet much of whose writing is concerned with literalism which rejects the poetic convention of lyricism. He wrote this series of poems in response to fellow French artist Judith Rothchild's four mezzotints. The four images can be viewed in sequence when folded out and displayed in a semicircle or read in page spreads side by side with the poems - the work builds on each other as in these lines: "ç'est visible que chacun / ressemble a ceux d'a cote / par un detail de forme ou bien / l'idee qu'il donne d'un lien" the mezzotints are so rich they look like they would feel like velvet to the touch; this work is a joy to behold on so many levels.

___DESCRIPTION: Original black wrappers with serigraph print by Rothchild concertina or "leporello" style wrappers stamped with title and two rows of squares in black marbled black and gray pastepaper guards and endpapers four gravure mezzotints with tissue guards text in French; handset in Vendome Romain and printed on an Albion Press Hahnemuhle paper oblong octavo size 7.5" by 8.5" 22 pp. limited edition this number 4 of 10 de luxe copies from a total edition of 50 signed by the James Sacre and Judith Rothchild. 1981CNJL2054New York: The Viking Press 1981. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. Quarto size 800 pp. with original publisher's mailing box. Charlotte Salomon 1917-1943 was a German-Jewish artist; born in Berlin she fled Nazi Germany to live in the south of France where she produced the 769 gouaches in "Life or Theater". The book is a somewhat fictionalized account of Salomon's upbringing her family's personal tragedies in the suicides of both her mother and grandmother and her love affair with Alfred Wolfsohn 1896-1962 a voice teacher also living in Berlin. After Salomon had finished the paintings and entrusted them to a friend for safekeeping she was captured by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz where she was gassed soon after her arrival. The paintings and the texts that accompany them read like a play as Salomon delves into her psyche and attempts to reconcile her life and work to the turbulent events happening in Europe around her.

___DESCRIPTION: Full light purple cloth with purple lettering on the spine four black-and-white photographs of portraits in the preface and foreword black-and-white reproductions of some of Salomon's paintings toward the front of the book 769 full-colour gouaches throughout the book; quarto size 11" by 9.75" pagination: i-iv v-xiv xv xvi 1-784.
