1950718021950. STEINBERG Saul. STEINBERG Saul. PORTRAITS. Sixteen pages numbered 81-96 stapled twice at the center extracted from a FLAIR magazine March 1950. 10 by 6 3/4 in. Each page is a black and white photograph representing a portrait comprised of assemblage and drawing by Steinberg. The portraits are witty and surprising due to Steinberg's use of common materials chairs and footstools boxes scissors and a pocket knife etc. which are transformed by a few deft lines into people cats and even a bird. For instance a single flower in a vase upon a small table draped with a cloth becomes with only a few lines indicating facial features drawn on the vase and with the addition of a string of pearls at the bottom of the vase and a beaded "belt" around the lace edge of the tablecloth a portrait of a lady in a flowered hat. The outer wrappers are moderately soiled and just starting at the head. The fore-edge of the back wrapper which is 1/4" wider than the other leaves has couple of nicks and shows some edgewear. Nonetheless it is very good. unknown books

A collection of Steinberg's works. Drawn between 1954 and 1960 some are previously unpublished. The majority of published items were originally published in the New Yorker during that period. Recurring themes throughout the collection are the posturing of men and women; social relationships architecture urbanization; politics and artmaking. Around 1960 Steinberg began to introduce more cerebral conceits and the final portion of the book displays more conceptual art. -- adapted from "Notes" page 256. "Throughout his career the acclaimed artist Saul Steinberg created a series of unique wondrous books. Far richer than simple catalogs or collections of drawings these carefully arranged works formed a kind of continuous visual autobiography--a record in drawings both simple and detailed comic and beautiful of an inimitable mind's encounter with the world. The Labyrinth first published in 1960 and long out of print may be the best of these. Here is Steinberg as he put it at the time "discovering and inventing a great variety of events: Illusion talks music women cats dogs birds the cube the crocodile the museum Moscow and Samarkand winter 1956 other Eastern countries America motels baseball horse racing bullfights art frozen music words geometry heroes harpies etc." This edition featuring all the original art along with new editorial material will allow readers to discover and invent Steinberg's world all over again"--Publisher.
