A collection of Steinberg's works. Drawn between 1954 and 1960 some are previously unpublished. The majority of published items were originally published in the New Yorker during that period. Recurring themes throughout the collection are the posturing of men and women; social relationships architecture urbanization; politics and artmaking. Around 1960 Steinberg began to introduce more cerebral conceits and the final portion of the book displays more conceptual art. -- adapted from "Notes" page 256. "Throughout his career the acclaimed artist Saul Steinberg created a series of unique wondrous books. Far richer than simple catalogs or collections of drawings these carefully arranged works formed a kind of continuous visual autobiography--a record in drawings both simple and detailed comic and beautiful of an inimitable mind's encounter with the world. The Labyrinth first published in 1960 and long out of print may be the best of these. Here is Steinberg as he put it at the time "discovering and inventing a great variety of events: Illusion talks music women cats dogs birds the cube the crocodile the museum Moscow and Samarkand winter 1956 other Eastern countries America motels baseball horse racing bullfights art frozen music words geometry heroes harpies etc." This edition featuring all the original art along with new editorial material will allow readers to discover and invent Steinberg's world all over again"--Publisher. Full color off-set printed multi-flap post card mailer with die-cut holes for puzzle and tab for closing. 3.5x5.5"; bright and unmarred with fully intact flaps.

An example of early 20th century Black Americana ephemera or as some refer to as 'Negrobilia' referring to a wide array of materials including mass advertisements postcards tourist souvenirs etc. with the image of an African American universally portrayed in a derogatory and racist manner. These items were produced and manufactured by and for white audiences that enhanced the perception of white racial superiority and class status. These type of items are particularly challenging to many communities however many scholars and private collectors alike agree these materials are historical records and reminders of the racist history of the United States and should not be invisible. The puzzle postcard is an example of mass produced racial stereotyping manufactured for an actual mailing enclosure. The instructions on the outside of the mailer state: "Arrange the flaps by placing one over another in such a manner as to show ONLY the eleven pickaninnies."

Reference: Goings Kenneth. At the time of its publication Jacques Maritain called Reveille for Radicals an "epoch-making" book and time has only reinforced the enduring importance of Alinsky's work. Based upon Alinsky's own experiences in Chicago's "Back of the Yards" district during the waning years of the Great Depression Reveille established a blueprint for community organizing that is still in use today. The book's influence along with its 1971 update Rules for Radicals on the current generation of American leaders including Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton has been much noted in fact Ms. Clinton's undergraduate thesis at Wellesley "An Analysis of the Alinsky Model" was an analysis and critique of Alinsky's community organizing methods. Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals is the last book published in 1971 by activist and writer Saul D. Alinsky shortly before his death. His goal for the Rules for Radicals was to create a guide for future community organizers to use in uniting low-income communities or "Have-Nots" in order for them to gain social political legal and economic power. Within it Alinsky compiled the lessons he had learned throughout his experiences of community organizing from 1939-1971 and targeted these lessons at the current new generation of radicals. Divided into ten chapters Rules for Radicals provides 10 lessons on how a community organizer can accomplish the goal of successfully uniting people into an active organization with the power to effect change on a variety of issues. Though targeted at community organization these chapters also touch on other issues that range from ethics education communication and symbol construction to nonviolence and political philosophy. Though published for the new generation of counterculture-era organizers in 1971 Alinsky's principles have been successfully applied by numerous government labor community and congregation-based organizations and the main themes of his organizational methods that were elucidated upon in Rules for Radicals have been recurring elements in political campaigns in recent years. Perhaps quite timely. Random House hardcover books
