Sharon Block writing in the Journal of American History notes that this is one of the books that terrified and incensed the populace who read about the vicious rapes by the redcoats p. 116ff. While courts of law kept the intimate details from the wider public newspapers books almanacs and a host of printed material were less restrained though leaving little to the imagination to whom the subject of rape was of prurient interest. After describing the various outrages the address says: How long will you permit this report and appeal from Col. Richard E. 1847007969Board of Assistant Aldermen City of New York New York 1847. Edition Unstated. Softcover. Fair Condition/No Dust Jacket. Size: Octavo standard book size. Text body is clean and free from previous owner annotation underlining and highlighting. Binding is sound. Cover title: "Report against Extension of Albany Street through Trinity Church Yard." Yellow paper wraps with hand lettered title and the words "Adopted May 3rd 1847 on Ayes & Noes unanimously" 11 pages two foldout maps Map of the Proposed Extension of Albany Street and Map Showing the Comparative Cost of Extending Albany Street or Widening Thames Street tipped in Statement of "The Cost of widening Thames-Street compared with the cost of extending Albany-Street; the Value of the Property taken from the Assessor's books of 1846." The report dated March 22nd 1847 was evidently printed as part of another document perhaps minutes of the Board as the pages are numbered 491-501. These pages were bound together with the wraps separately at some point after the report was adopted in May of 1847. Wraps are soiled & chipped foxing throughout water stain at fore edge of pages up to page 8 maps toned one map has a short separation at two fold lines and some chipping where map extended beyond the wraps. The question of extending Albany Street through the Trinity Church Yard was a controversy that lasted into the 1850s despite having been adopted in this report in 1847. "The Petitioners in this matter complain that they have no thoroughfare from the North to the East River and that for the want of one they suffer much in the wintertime and are obliged on account of the steepness of ascent in Rector and Thames streets and the narrowness of the latter to cart their goods through Marketfield Street or Battery Place to Broadway in order to reach the East side of the City." The conclusion reached in this document is "That it is inexpedient improper and unnecessary to extend Albany Street to Broadway through Trinity Church Yard or that any street whatever should be open through or over that ground; and that the prayer of the Petitioners be and is hereby denied." Ultimately Albany Street was not extended through the Trinity Church Yard. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1 lb 0 oz. Category: Genealogy & Local History; Books; Picture 2: Title Page. Good- Jisc LHD locates three copies only BL NSL & TCD. A delicate copy of the unusual miniature edition of this juvenile title based on the writing of Isaac Watts from the libraries of Valentine Ackland and British artist Phillida Gili. VA and Sylvia Townsend Warner likely met Gili through her parents Reynolds Stone and Janet Woods who themselves became friends through VA's antiques business which sheran from the long sun-parlour of their Frome Vauchurch home in the 1950s. VA whose shop "was especially popular with collectors of dolls' houses and miniature objects" Bingham 2021 evidently also appreciated miniature books herself. One of a collection of four miniature books from VA's library that we have handled with yet another featuring a gift inscription from the first period of her affair with Elizabeth Wade White: "V.A from E.W.W 1:1:39" these items suggest perhaps that miniature books were a lover's currency of sorts between the two women. They certainly travel compactly and can be packaged easily a consideration for such a long-standing transatlantic affair. In an odd parallel with VA EWW also went on to trade in antiquarian and collectable objects running White & Holahan Books with her lover Evelyn Holahan from their Connecticut home the Patch from the 1940s. Upon her death in November 1969 VA whose success as an antiques dealer had derived in part from her "sense of objects as individual things relics of people and containers of their love" ibid bequeathed many of her own books to friends hence Phillida Gili's inscription: "left to me by Valentine Ackland December 1969".
