Illustrated with 53 engraved plates including 5 double-page designs.<br /><br />Published in c.1731-1733 without imprint and with the engraved cartouche to the title verso inscribed 'Most of these Designs are already Executed & the rest are at Burlington House'.<br /><br />'Ware attribute many but not all of the designs shown in the plates to Inigo Jones: six chimney pieces one staircase one theater seven ceilings piers at Windsor Castle an altarpiece and screen in Somerset House Chapel a stable and a simple rectangular garden "Seat" with Doric columns in antis. William Kent is represented by more designs than Jones: 11 chimney pieces the dining room at Houghton another room designed for the Duke of Grafton an obelisk for Shotover and a variety of garden seats and pavilions: a "Room" at Shotover two "Rooms" at Claremont "Seats" for Sir Charles Hotham and Lord Cobham and a domed "Temple." Kent's garden "Rooms" are simple in plan and based on octagonal square or circular figures. The building at Shotover is domed and the entrance of one "Room" at Claremont is framed by battered architraves. The largest garden structure is the two-story domed "Seat" depicted in Plates 43 and 44 five windows wide on the ground story front by hexastyle pedimented Doric portico with three rooms inside on the ground floor. There is one design by Lord Burlington for the piers at the entrance to Chiswick House Plate 25. 1937111145<p>The First UK Printing published by Chatto And Windus in 1937. One of only 500 copies printed. The BOOK is in Very Good or better condition. A little pushing at the spine ends with a small lightly faded area at the lower spine end corresponding to the the area of loss in the wrapper. Crimson top-stain still present. Gilt titling remains bright. Mild splaying of the front board. Toning to the text block and page edges. Mild offsetting and spotting to the end-papers. The tissue guard to the frontispiece portrait is still present. Free from inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good condition. It bears the correct price of 12s. 6d. net. Mild edge-wear with some loss at the spine ends and the upper front panel edge. A few closed tears to the folds with some professional japanese tissue repairs on the verso to two closed tears to the spine folds. Light toning to the spine. The wrapper looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Accompanied with the loosely inserted Publisher's compliments slip with the H/W compliments of Mr I. M. Parsons. The latter an editor at Chatto went on to write the introduction and notes for the revised edition of this title published in 1979 by Chatto. From the library of American poet Richard Eberhart. This publication concludes with the Persian translation of the work on the history of Persia by Mirkhond author from the end of the 9th century which signifies: The garden of purity or history of the prophets kings and caliphs. The studies by the orientalist and linguist Silvestre de Sacy attest to as much erudition as sagacity; he would be named in 1806 professor of Persian at the Collège de France and administrator of the École spéciale des langues orientales also at the Collège de France. Isaac Schmidt 1779-1847 was an Amsterdam-born Moravian missionary and Orientalist specialising in Tibetan and Mongolian. As a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences - the present work is dedicated to its president Uwarow - he spent much of his career in St. Petersburg devoting his later years to Bible translations in Kalmyk and Mongolian. As usual some leaves with browning. <br/><br/><em>First appearance of the famous issue of Acta Eruditorum in which the 4 solutions by the 4 most eminent mathematicians at the time were printed together. There were in all 5 solutions to the posed problem and Newton's solution was first printed in the Philosophical Transactions January 1697 and reprinted here. The solution proposed by L'Hopital not printed here was not published until 1988.The brachistochrone problem was posed by Johann Bernoulli in Acta Eruditorum in June 1696. He introduced the problem as follows: "I Johann Bernoulli address the most brilliant mathematicians in the world. Nothing is more attractive to intelligent people than an honest challenging problem whose possible solution will bestow fame and remain as a lasting monument. Following the example set by Pascal Fermat etc. I hope to gain the gratitude of the whole scientific community by placing before the finest mathematicians of our time a problem which will test their methods and the strength of their intellect. If someone communicates to me the solution of the proposed problem I shall publicly declare him worthy of praise." Johann Bernoulli and Leibniz deliberately tempted Newton with this problem. It is not surprising given the dispute over the calculus that Johann Bernoulli had included these words in his challenge:- ."there are fewer who are likely to solve our excellent problems aye fewer even among the very mathematicians who boast that they. have wonderfully extended its bounds by means of the golden theorems which they thought were known to no one but which in fact had long previously been published by others."According to Newton's biographer Conduitt he solved the problem in an evening after returning home from the Royal Mint. Newton: . "in the midst of the hurry of the great recoinage did not come home till four in the afternoon from the Tower very much tired but did not sleep till he had solved it which was by four in the morning."Newton send his solution to his friend Charles Montague and Montague published anonymously in the Transactions. Newton's solution presented here in the Acta is also anonymous. The episode did not please Newton as he later wrote: "I do not love to be dunned pestered and teased by foreigners about mathematical things ." After the competition Johann Bernoulli said ". my elder brother made up the fourth of these after Leibniz himself and Newton that the three great nations Germany England and France each one of their own to unite with myself in such a beautiful search all finding the same truth."Struik Edt.
