This is an about very good hardcover copy in dark blue cloth boards with title in gilt on the front cover. Very clean inside and out. Top right corners of boards worn. Internally very clean, some handling of the pages, not crisp. This was the first catalog published by the Greenwich Gallery located in Greenwich Village, on 71 Washington Place, in the area around New York University, which itself surrounds Washington Square Park. The exhibition featured paintings and sculpture by 50 American contemporary artists. Many of them immigrants from Russia or Eastern Europe, many Jewish. The gallery intended to show American modern, but representational or figurative art. They included: Milton Avery, Saul Baizerman, Isabel Bishop, Byron Browne, Charles Burchfield, David Burliuk, Doris Caesar, Jose de Creeft, Philip Evergood, William Gropper, Chaim Gross, George Grosz, Edward Hopper, Leon Kroll, Jack Levine, Jacques Lipchitz, Georgia O'Keefe, Henry Varnum Poor, Larry Rivers, Ben Shahn, the Soyer brothers Raphael, Isaac and Moses, Abraham Walkowitz, Max Weber, Andrew Wyeth and William Zorach, among many others. ril. Isaac Newton si staglia come una figura di assoluto primo piano sulla scena della sua epoca. La pubblicazione dei Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica (1687) e dell'Opticks (1704), due capolavori destinati a cambiare per sempre la storia della scienza, rivelò ai contemporanei un genio eclettico e versatile, che aveva scoperto le leggi dell'universo e la natura composita della luce solare. La fama che Newton si era conquistato con i risultati delle sue ricerche fu così pervasiva da sconfinare ben oltre le sue competenze scientifiche, tanto che nel corso della sua lunga carriera ricoprì cariche prestigiose e di potere: consigliere di fiducia del governo, direttore della Zecca, presidente della Royal Society. Eppure, questa immagine pubblica faceva da schermo a un altro Newton, che nascondeva in privato delle convinzioni religiose in contrasto con la legge e la dottrina anglicana tali che, se fossero state rese note, avrebbero messo in pericolo non solo il suo lavoro, ma perfino la sua vita. Religione e fede dominarono il pensiero di Newton. E le migliaia di pagine manoscritte dedicate all'esegesi biblica e all'interpretazione delle profezie testimoniano appunto che le sue posizioni teologiche, a partire dalla negazione del concetto centrale di Trinità, erano quelle di un vero e proprio eretico. Non stupisce quindi che lui stesso e gli eredi le avessero deliberatamente occultate, rimanendo per secoli pressoché inaccessibili. In questa ricerca Rob Iliffe ci introduce al pensiero religioso di Newton, facendoci capire la stretta connessione tra fede e scienza in uno dei momenti cruciali della storia e della cultura moderna. Il risultato è una biografia vibrante sulla profonda spiritualità dell'uomo che cambiò, come nessuno aveva mai fatto prima, il modo di guardare l'universo.
